Responsibilities:
MSTS is seeking an experienced electronics technician with mechanical aptitude to support engineers, scientists, and more senior technicians in assembling, testing, and operating control systems and electronic systems associated with the Scorpius linear induction accelerator as part of the Advance Sources and Detectors (ASD) project. This position is based in Nevada but requires significant upfront travel to Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratory prior to the accelerator arriving in North Las Vegas for integration testing and final installation and operation at the U1a underground experiment facility located at the NNSS.

Key Responsibilities

Senior Technologist
  • Install, maintain, validate, and repair electrical systems, mechanical systems, and associated instrumentation in research and development settings.
  • Support and coordinates preliminary studies of job requirements, scope, design criteria, and design concepts.
  • Support the research of concepts and approaches to the solution of complex technical problems.
  • Support operations at Nuclear or High Hazard (HH) facilities to maintain a condition and configuration to accept and support programs and projects.
  • Provide support for execution of program/project activities and data collection (i.e., classified systems/networks, diagnostics, x-rays and laser systems).
  • Define specifications for procurements and completes purchase requests.
  • Contribute solutions for moderately complex assignment-related problems.
  • Support studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, systems and equipment.
  • Perform technical research and gathers data needed by engineers.
Principal Technologist

  • Define specifications for procurements and completes purchase requests.
  • Contribute solutions for moderately complex assignment-related problems.
  • Support studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, systems and equipment.
  • Perform technical research and gathers data needed by engineers.
  • Mentor less experienced individuals in specific discipline.
  • Provide direction to less experienced S/E technicians and monitors the work of technicians and support personnel.
  • May serve as lead technical support person on teams with well-defined scope of work.
  • Create innovative approaches through application of emerging technical developments, processes and standards.
  • Exercise considerable latitude and judgment in determining best approaches to achieve technical objectives on an assignment. Work is reviewed for judgment exercised on approaches to goals. May lead technical teams of 2-3 people.
Qualifications:
Senior Technologist
  • Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 5 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 7 years’ progressive related experience.
  • Experience with electrical components, circuitry, the building up and hand wiring of circuit boards, soldering, AC/DC electronics, basic hand tools, electronic test and measurement equipment, and basic electronic troubleshooting.
  • Mechanical skills including use of hand tools and power tools, ability to read and build from design drawings for mechanical assemblies, experience with vacuum pumps and vacuum systems.
  • Able to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Able to work underground required.
  • Able to work well with others, as they will regularly interface with team members, other teams, and outside organizations.
  • Expected to recognize hazardous situations and stop work to prevent personnel injury and equipment damage
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work with initiative and employ independent judgment and knowledge to ensure that requirements are completed safely, efficiently, and on time.
  • Able to effectively deal with pressures of deadlines and multiple tasks.
  • Experience working in a team environment that includes scientist, engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision in a dynamic multidisciplinary project environment with simultaneous commitments to safety, performance, cost, and schedule.
  • Experience using standard office software products.
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and work as part of a team.
  • Able to execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and NNSS policies and procedures.
  • Able to manage working at multiple sites - the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada, the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada), LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and as needed, LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory).
  • Frequent travel to New Mexico is required; Frequent travel to California may be required.
  • Once travel requirements have subsided, work locations will include primarily the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) and occasionally the North Las Vegas Facility.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change). Travel, as needed, to support experiments, workshops and other collaborative activities.
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Principal Technologist
  • Associate degree in field related to the position plus at least 9 years’ progressive related experience or High School diploma plus 11 years’ progressive related experience.
  • Experience leading teams to develop, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain electronics and mechanical systems.
  • Experience engaging with multiple layers of project management and interfacing customers
  • May serve as team lead to over NNSS technicians at Partner Lab sites, providing feedback and status to project management.
  • Knowledge of hazard mitigation strategies and documentation to ensure workforce safety pertaining to activity level work.
  • Experience with electrical components, circuitry, the building up and hand wiring of circuit boards, soldering, AC/DC electronics, basic hand tools, electronic test and measurement equipment, and basic electronic troubleshooting.

MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4, “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted.
