Responsibilities

Core Responsibilites and Essential Functions
  • Manager of Perfusion Services/ Chief Perfusionist Administrative Duties.
    a.Directs the day to day operation of the perfusion team.
    b.Manages and assigns staff to ensure adequate staffing to meet patient care needs.
    c.Responsible for staff recruitment, coaching and counseling, provides staff with resources and information required to perform optimally.
    d.Assists in developing short and long term goals and objectives and gives direction to staff in working towards those goals and objectives.
    e.Completes performance evaluations.
    f.Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures, quality control and assurance, standards of care and surgeon preferences.
    g.Ensures adherence to all documentation standards and identifies needs for revision to policies, procedures and forms.
    h.Oversees staff competencies, regulatory requirements, and completeness of paperwork.
    i.Provides consultation with physicians in selection of appropriate equipment, supplies and techniques during extracorporeal perfusion.
    j.Purchases supplies and capital equipment related to extracorporeal perfusion and assures periodic maintenance to this equipment.
    k.Maintains adequate back up equipment, inventory, materials and supplies.
    l.Implements new techniques, equipment and programs to improve the delivery of patient care.
    m.Maintains department records and logs.
    n.Maintains and verifies accuracy of perfusion database and cardiology referral sheets.
    o.Oversees completion of STS data forms and research data collection forms.
    p.Manages ECMO program operations and budget.
  • Prepares for Cases.
    a. Selects necessary supplies for the procedure, and appropriately assembles and prepares
    all perfusion equipment (including, but not limited to: cardiopulmonary bypass system,
    cardioplegia delivery system, ultrafiltration, autotransfusion, etc.).
    b. Perfusion record, worksheet and related paperwork are accurately completed and an
    appropriate action is formulated based on the individual patient condition (including, but not
    limited to: knowledge of patient?s history, pre-op status, lab and cardiac cath. reports, etc.).
    c. Awareness of the hazards of body fluids, proper precautions and disposition of soiled
    equipment in a proper place is demonstrated in daily practice


  • Manages the equipment and supply maintenance.
    a. Equipment is cleaned in an appropriate and timely manner.
    b. Equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer?s recommendations.
    c. Appropriate supplies in perfusion carts are maintained.
    d. Supplies are tracked within the department and apprises the appropriate personnel of
    inventory level.


  • Preparation of cardiopulmonary bypass.
    a. Diverse working knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, anatomy, physiology,
    physics, and mechanics of cardiopulmonary bypass and mechanical circulatory support
    (MCS).
    b. Proper communication with the attending surgeon.
    c. Documentation of cardiopulmonary bypass and MCS in an appropriate and timely manner.
    d. Awareness of changes that may be needed in therapy when presented with changing
    conditions.


  • Performs those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, and/or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and/or mechanical circulatory support (MCS)
    a. A working knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass equipment, anatomy, physiology, physics
    and mechanics of cardiopulmonary bypass is demonstrated on a daily basis.
    b. Critical situations pertaining to support, treatment, measurement, and/or supplementation of
    the cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system of the patient are recognized and reacted to
    in an appropriate manner, including proper communication with the attending surgeon.
    c. Appropriate changes are made, as needed, in therapy when presented with changing
    conditions, including administration of medication, anesthetic gases and blood components.
    d. Aspects of cardiopulmonary bypass are documented in an appropriate and timely manner.
    e. A working knowledge of cardioplegia delivery systems, including antegrade, retrograde and
    cerebral perfusion.
    f. All perfusion and ECMO equipment and supplies necessary for the procedure are assembled and prepared according to policy and procedure.
    g. A working knowledge of autotransfusion is safely demonstrated on a daily basis.
    h. A working knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, physics and mechanics of an intra-aortic
    balloon pump is routinely demonstrated.
    i. Aspects of support, treatment, measurement, and/or supplementation of the
    cardiopulmonary and/or circulatory system are documented in an appropriate and timely
    manner.
    j. A working knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, physics and mechanics of ventricular
    assist devices are routinely demonstrated.
    k. A working knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, physics and mechanics of extracorporeal
    membrane oxygenation is routinely demonstrated.
    l. A working knowledge of the Blood Gas analyzer, including Quality Control, is routinely
    demonstrated.
    m. A working knowledge of the Activated Clotting Time machine, including Quality Control, is routinely demonstrated.
  • Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
    a.Positive, professional demeanor is projected through verbal and non-verbal communications.
    b.Information for patients and staff is delivered in a manner that is supportive, timely and understandable.
    c.Interpersonal conflicts are resolved using appropriate methods and organizational resources, including but not limited to Employee Relations Services and Faculty Employee Assistance Program.
    d.Diverse perspectives are acknowledged; language and behaviors are modeled that build inclusiveness in the work environment.
    e.Ideas and suggestions are clearly communicated.

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent from an accredited Cardiovascular Perfusion Program. Required

Required Minimum Experience
  • Minimum 5 years Perfusionist Preferred

Required Minimum Skills
  • Extensive knowledge of coronary heart disease, cardiac anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and clinical management of patients.
  • Ability to work within a team environment with individuals of varying abilities and responsibilities.
  • Must be able to interact with physicians and provide them with interpretation of data collected.
  • Able to handle emergency and stressful situations and must be able to take call. Must have good communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of perfusion practices and equipment and cardiovascular surgery procedures and terminology.

  • Cert Clin Perfusionists Required
  • Georgia Clinical Perfusionist Required
  • Basic Life Support Required
  • BLS - Instructor Required
  • BLS - Provisional Required
