ABOUT US: The Schaumburg Park District is an award-winning parks and recreation agency that provides its 80,000 residents with a wide variety of recreational programs, classes, and events, as well as facilities, parks, and open spaces! Spring Valley features 135 acres of prairie, woodlands, and wetlands, three miles of walking trails, a nature center, an 1880s living history farm and Bison’s Bluff Nature Playground.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Farm Programs, the Farm Camp Leader designs and leads farm-themed summer camps for school-aged children, ages 5-13 years. They will be responsible for leading daily educational and hands-on activities, with activities ranging from farm animal care and handling, gardening, cooking, and outdoor skills such as navigation and hiking while maintaining the interest of their campers throughout the week. They should be comfortable around large and small farm animals and will be responsible for the safety of their campers while interacting with farm animals, implements and the artifacts on site. They will maintain a commitment to the operation of a safe and effective camp program, communicating effectively with guardians before, during, and after camp on an as needed basis. They will set-up and clean-up from their camp each day, ensuring that their camp space is clean at the end of every day for other activities going on in the facility. They will help keep camp supplies organized and communicate with supervisor when supplies are needed. They will attend all trainings pertaining to their job. They will also handle all other duties as directed by their supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS: The best applicant will love working with children of various ages and have prior experience leading youth in a program or camp setting, demonstrate regular and reliable attendance and present themselves as a good positive role model. They will have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organization skills. They will have the ability and flexibility to adapt their camp as needed to meet the needs of a group or due to changing weather conditions. They will be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. They will be able to work both independently, as well as a team. Having a flexible working schedule is preferred. Having knowledge and experience with farm skills and animals is preferred. Possess certification in CPR/AED is preferred; training is provided if not certified.

SCHEDULING & PAY: This is a seasonal, part-time position paying $15.00/hour. Position begins mid-May and runs through mid-August. Schedule will vary by week, Heritage Farm camps run between the hours of 9:00am-4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Additional hours may be available when the fall programming season begins in September.
