Statement of the Job:

Position is available to employees of the Associated C.O.L.T. Staff of the University of Maine from 05/16/2023 through 05/22/2023 and open to external applicants thereafter.


This position is responsible for performing clerical duties related to selling, stocking, and inventory management in the University’s retail dining operations. The position is a full-time, 10-month work year*. Work schedule is Monday-Friday with a variable schedule based on fluxuating summer operations. This position pays $15.38/hr or applicable transfer rate for a current employee within the ACSUM collective bargaining unit.


  • Normal work year for this position is from mid-July to mid-May, however, the successful applicant will start as soon as posssible for training and continue with no short work break until May 2024.

  • Processes transactions in a computerized cash register system, which involves scanning items and processing various forms of payments.
  • Provides information regarding account balances, payment methods, retail services, products, hours and policies.
  • Provides exemplary customer service in a welcoming, accurate and speedy manner to all visitors to the retail dining operations. Customers include students, staff, faculty, alumni, administrators, vendors and a wide range of visitors.
  • Maintains merchandise such as food, beverages and other items on the sales floor, which includes labeling, arranging, and stocking items.
  • Performs physical inventory.
  • Participates in opening and closing activities of the operation.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level.

This position is considered a University of Maine Dining Services position through June 30, 2023. UMaine Dining Services employees hired between now and June 30, 2023 will be offered positions with Sodexo, effective July 1, 2023.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and related experience.
  • Demonstrated exemplary customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and the general public sufficient to exchange and convey information and policies and to receive work direction.
  • Basic understanding of mathematical concepts and calculations, knowledge of and experience in cash handling techniques and computerized Point of Service (POS) systems and related software.
  • Demonstrated experience handling multiple tasks simultaneously.


Preferred:

  • Experience working in a retail food service environment.
