Position Summary:
An individual will be hired EITHER as an intermediate level Code Inspector or experienced Code Enforcement Officer who is most closely aligned to the following criteria and is able to recognize how strategies, decisions, and business situations impact outcomes to maximize value added to the organization.

Code Inspector:
Responsible for enforcing city ordinances dealing with Property Maintenance, Minimum Housing, Single Family, Multi-Family and Zoning with a primary focus in residential areas.

Code Enforcement Officer:
Responsible for enforcing city ordinances dealing with Property Maintenance, Minimum Housing, Single Family, Multi-Family and Zoning for residential and/or commercial properties.

Essential Job Functions:
Code Inspector :
  • Respond to and investigate citizen complaints.
  • Actively patrol assigned areas to review for code violations.
  • Issue notices of violation, citations and nuisance abatement work orders for city contractors.
  • Enforce minimum housing standards in assigned areas and prepare cases for Housing Standards Board including Notification of Condemnation.
  • Enforce City Ordinances and International Building and Residential Codes by performing scheduled inspections.
  • Represent City in court as required.

Code Enforcement Officer:

Minimum Education & Work Experience : Code Inspector: High School Diploma or GED. No related experience necessary Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Code Enforcement Officer: 60 college credit hours advanced training beyond high school level in related area. 2 years experience in code enforcement Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills:

Education/ Experience:
  • 60 college credit hours advanced training beyond high school level in related area
  • Up to 1 year experience in code enforcement or similar experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • General knowledge of applicable ordinances, laws, codes and regulations
  • General knowledge of construction standards and inspection procedures
  • Ability to learn quickly and remain flexible in a fast paced work environment
  • Ability to maintain neat and concise data
  • Multi-lingual (Spanish) skills highly preferred
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office (including: Word, Outlook, Excel)

Code Enforcement Officer:

Education/ Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as Public Administration, Construction Science, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable ordinances, laws, codes and regulations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction standards and inspection procedures
  • Ability to learn quickly and remain flexible in a fast paced work environment
  • Ability to maintain neat and concise data
  • Ability to read and understand blue prints
  • Multi-lingual (Spanish) skills highly preferred
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office (including: Word, Outlook, Excel)
Licenses & Certifications: Code Inspector: Registered Texas Code Enforcement Officer* or ability to obtain in 1 year Texas Real Estate Commission Professional Inspector License, preferred Valid Class C Texas driver's license *Based on current code requirements Code Enforcement Officer: Intermediate Texas Code Enforcement Officer* Texas Real Estate Commission Professional Inspector License, preferred Valid Class C Texas driver's license *Based on current code requirements Physical Tasks & Working Conditions: The incumbent works in an outdoor environment; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. Must be able to walk on uneven and unpaved surfaces.
