Salary Range for These Positions:

  • Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief I: $36,976-$58,399 yearly
  • Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief II: $39,521-$64,449 yearly

Position Description


Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief I:

Performs skilled transportation maintenance activities and leads a crew of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor or their assistant and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief II:

Performs skilled transportation maintenance activities and leads a crew of Transportation Maintenance Technicians. Reports to a
maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency
notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level establish their own
work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties for Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief I:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Assists in monitoring materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker.
  • Troubleshoots problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Duties for Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief II:

  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Serves as a lead worker.
  • Troubleshoots problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief I:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 5 years roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief II:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 6 years roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies for Tranportation Maintenance Crew Chief I & II:

Considerable knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Incident management procedures
  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
  • Using heavy highway equipment
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-hard hat, steel-toe boots, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
