SAN DIEGUITO RIVER PARK : INTERPRETIVE RANGER

DEFINITION

Under the general direction of the Senior Interpretive Ranger, the Interpretive Ranger shall plan, organize, implement, and supervise educational, outreach and volunteer programs for the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority. This position will assist in determining educational programs and activities offered to park visitors and school groups, with the goal of developing a sense of personal stewardship of the resources of the San Dieguito River Park.

The Interpretive Ranger will also direct the visiting public toward appropriate and enjoyable use of the River Park and amenities; train and work with volunteers; lead volunteer work events; and perform public relations and outreach duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Not limited to the list below and under the direction and supervision of the Senior Interpretive Ranger.

· Work with other Park staff and volunteers to develop, administer, supervise and support interpretive and volunteer programs (i.e., interns, volunteers, docents, Dust Devils and Trail Patrollers);

· Oversee general operations and maintenance of Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead;

· Write, administer and supervise grant funded programs;

· Facilitate the accounting of volunteer hours;

· Lead hikes, prepare and give presentations, and attend community meetings;

· Cooperate and communicate with Park staff to minimize duplication of effort and maximize effectiveness;

· Provide organizational staff support and/or volunteers for special projects;

· Plan, design and implement (with assistance from Park staff and others) interpretive displays, interpretive brochures, etc.;

· Maintain interpretive features and programming;

· Prepare public relations information and press releases about appropriate events and volunteer activities and programs;

· Schedule regular activities (e.g., weekly docent-led hikes and work events) and produce activity schedule;

· Recruit and provide orientation to new volunteers;

· Coordinate and provide continuing training for volunteer and docent programs;

· Contribute articles for the monthly Park newsletter;

· Develop methods of recognition for volunteers;

· Provide general assistance to other staff in the completion of their duties;

· Answer general questions from the public and explain Park policies and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

· Education, training and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties listed above;

· Enthusiasm for working with people and helping them learn about nature;

· Must be a leader and highly energetic;

· Ability and willingness to take the initiative in developing the programs needed to carry out the Park’s educational mission;

· Ability and willingness to support your colleagues at the Park and the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy in advancing our shared goals;

· The ability and willingness to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with other staff members and partnership organizations;

· Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the general public and volunteers;

· Knowledge of public relations in a park environment;

· Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;

· Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in protecting, maintaining and enhancing park natural areas;

· Skilled at public relations and interpretive techniques in a park environment;

· Ability to work with and train and motivate volunteers;

· Knowledge of plant and animal species native to the San Diego area;

· Knowledge of cultural and historical background of the San Dieguito River Valley.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Education, training and experience, which would demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills listed above. Education and experience should include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and at least 6 months of experience in the operation, maintenance and protection of a park, forest, and natural recreational or historical area. Education may be substituted with substantial experience that demonstrates advanced knowledge of the principals and practices of interpreting a park, forest, and natural recreational and historical area and managing volunteer programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Frequent and extensive walking, climbing, and lifting heavy objects.
  • Out in the field in all weather conditions including very cold and hot temperatures and rain.
  • Workweek will generally include weekend days.
  • Office work including answer phones and email, preparing documents, coordinating schedules, creating presentations, etc.

SPECIAL NOTES, LICENSES OR REQUIREMENTS

A valid California driver’s license is required. Class B driver’s license with passengers endorsement, “first responder” first-aid and CPR is required within 60 days of hire date.

PROMOTION POTENTIAL

Salary increases and promotions are based solely on merit as reflected in the employee evaluation. Employees’ performances will be evaluated annually at a minimum, with merit increases to be determined annually. Each new employee is on probationary status for the first six months.

BENEFITS

Starting salary is $21 per hour. Employees will earn vacation, sick leave and holidays according to the schedule shown in the office manual. Group Health, State Disability, Workers Compensation, Life Insurance and Unemployment Insurance benefits are provided for eligible permanent employees. Retirement benefits are received through the County Employees Retirement Association.
