This Administrative Support Associate (ASA) is an on-site position at the Journey level that coordinates the day-to-day activities within the Political Science and Public Affairs Department, a collegial and productive group of faculty, staff, and students. The department ASA is often the department’s first point of contact with the university and the public. The ASA will work directly with faculty in the department and staff from across the university to ensure the success of our programs. The successful candidate will communicate effectively with others, problem solve, meet deadlines, and a have willingness to adapt to new situations and policies. A technical knowledge, including computer skills, will be needed to work with Western Carolina University’s software and reporting platforms. This position will involve such activities as budget supervision, event planning, and personnel management. Good judgment and patience with people, and an ability to adjust to changing requirements and requests are essential.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Ability to organize, prioritize, and reprioritize tasks within the office; must be self-motivated and proactively address department needs without direct supervision; must possess a high degree of proficiency with computers such as word processing and spreadsheet programs and possess the ability to become efficient with university software programs such as Banner and 25Live; must possess the ability to perform multiple and varying tasks through the day and maintain long-term calendars of reporting or task due dates from year to year; must possess patience and the ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats; will assist with event planning for the department and arranging student and faculty travel; experience with (or a willingness to learn) maintaining and updating the department’s social media accounts and web page; the ability to learn and comply with university policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree; office systems/office management degree; experience in office management; accounting experience helpful.
