The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) provides statewide leadership of a high-quality mental health and addiction prevention, treatment and recovery system that is effective and valued by Ohioans. The Bureau of Correctional Recovery Services works with offenders in Ohio's prisons to instill an improved sense of responsibility and the ability to become law-abiding citizens.
Recovery Services-Therapeutic Community Alcohol and Drug Counselors use evidence-based treatment approaches in the treatment of offenders in prison who are in need of substance abuse recovery programming.
Duties of the Alcohol and Drug Counselor include:
  • At assigned correctional institution, conducts interviews and provides counseling services to clients in the Therapeutic Community
  • Screens clients to determine eligibility for substance use disorder treatment services
  • Completes assessments, treatment plans, progress notes and discharge planning on participants (documented in electronic health record)
  • Participates as an active member of the treatment team
  • Schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (Hours may vary)
Qualifications
On record as Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant in process of achieving ‘Chemical Dependency Counselor’ credential recognized by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board or other Ohio licensing authority with jurisdiction over professionals authorized to provide counseling services (e.g., Medical Board; Psychology Board; Nursing Board; Counselor & Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board); valid driver’s license.
Knowledge of alcohol & other drug dependencies*; counseling; agency policies & procedures relative to alcohol & other drug dependency counseling*. Skill in operation of personal computer*.Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions & take appropriate actions; handle sensitive contacts with inmates/offenders; define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; write meaningful, concise & accurate reports; counsel inmates/offenders on sensitive alcohol & other drug dependency issues.
