Job Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide basic actuarial analyses, based upon generally accepted actuarial principles, and under the direction and oversight of more senior level actuaries. The completed analyses will be used by internal business leaders for data-based decision making. These analyses may relate to various areas of actuarial expertise, including: Pricing, Reserving, Reinsurance, Corporate Reporting, or combinations of these areas.
Job Responsibilities
- Providing reserving analysis to estimate appropriate levels of IBNR, based upon data that reconciles to the general ledger.This may include working with the Accounting Department to ensure the accuracy of booked reserves.
- Evaluating existing products to maximize profitability, by targeting profitable areas for growth, and unprofitable areas for corrective actions.Working with Underwriters to design effective corrective actions plans, and monitoring the success of such action plans.
- Work with other departments to fully understand Markel's exposure to risk for each policy/contract/treaty being reviewed and appropriately reflecting such exposure in proposed rates.
- Assisting in corporate projects related to risk assessment, ad-hoc reserving, IT projects, etc.
- Identifying, developing and implementing technology changes to improve efficiencies and minimize future processing and workflow issues.
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree
Certification
- 1-2 Actuarial Exams (CAS) preferred
Work Experience/Skill Set
- College degree and 1-2 completed exams or 1+ years of experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Advanced computer skills in MS Office
- Excellent presentation skills for both technical and non-technical audience
- Creative problem solver who is detail-oriented and possesses exceptional organization and analytical skills
- Maintaining working relationships with other departments is of primary importance
