The Tacoma Fire Department’s Information Technology Division is recruiting for an enthusiastic Information Technology Analyst who implements and supports functions related to enterprise systems; this includes hardware, software, and policy requirements of the department. The position will work collaboratively with the other Analysts and be a bridge between the Computer Support Technicians and Analysts. This position will provide support to a fast-paced 24/7 emergency response department. This position will provide maintenance of critical systems, specifically on the hardware and software installed in the fleet of emergency response vehicles. The desired candidate will need to have strong customer service skills and be able to navigate an environment of rapid change. The desired candidate will need to have the ability to effectively manage their tasks and projects in sometimes highly stressful environments and scenarios.

This is the first-level classification in a series of four specialized professional information technology classes. This class is distinguished by the performance of the least complex work in the series. In support of information systems and users, this position performs duties with specific instructions to be completed, following established methods, procedures, and guidelines to complete work assignments. Consults with higher–level technical staff to resolve complex problems. Works under the regular guidance of a higher-level IT professional or manager. Work is oriented toward productivity, skill development, and the development of professional judgment. This position will also provide assistance, support, and guidance to the Fire Department’s Computer Support Technician (CST) positions.

A day in the life of the Application Development Systems Analyst
  • Provide assistance, TIER 1 support, and guidance to Fire Department’s Computer Support Technician (CST) positions and IT tickets.
  • Provide service in the role of IT Analyst to include, but not limited to the following:
    Serve as TIER 2 escalation point for Fire Department IT tickets and requests for service.
    Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot problems, isolate solutions to network, applications, operating systems, file servers, network hardware and software; system administration of distributed enterprise management tools; monitor systems disks; prepare and maintain documentation.
    Participate in project rollout for new applications, provide technical recommendations, and work individually or with the team to implement the resolution.
    Ensure timely communication to end-users, project teams, peers, and supervisors.
    Ensure timely acknowledgment, response, resolution, or escalation of all emails, requests, and incidents.
    Record, track, and document the problem-solving process, including successful and unsuccessful decisions made, and actions taken, through to final resolution.
    Troubleshoot computer hardware, software, and system difficulties; propose solutions, track, and assure resolution through appropriate follow-up methods.
    Cross-train with various high level IT Analysts to gain knowledge and experience with the department’s applications, systems, technology hardware, and processes.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Equivalent combination to: Bachelor's degree in computer science or Associate's degree in computer science related field and at least two years or more directly related information technology work experience.




LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Some positions may require a valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.




KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Understand concepts of information technology including computers, peripherals, operating systems and applications.
  • Knowledge of principles and concepts of total quality process improvements and problem solving methods.
  • Knowledge of computer technology principles, their application, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Knowledge of specialized technologies, such as applications, tools, systems, and/or databases.
  • Knowledge of system security systems, backup, disaster recovery and related processes.
  • Knowledge of data and system security, and other similar technical processes.
  • Knowledge in detecting errors in logs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skill at estimating the level of effort and resources for technical projects.

This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 120. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification. Appointment is subject to passing a background check.

The work schedule for this position will be assigned by the hiring manager at time of appointment. Occasional 2nd shift and travel to other sites is required. Current work schedules include (but are not limited to) Monday – Friday.
