EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Current Food Handlers permit.
  • 2 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Ability to observe staff behavior and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic and creative in spiritual leadership.
  • Ability to operate a telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Possess leadership skills with the ability to plan, originate, organize, and execute special programs.
  • Ability to teach and lead a number of activities.
  • Ability to communicate well with others from diverse backgrounds, ages and nationalities.
  • Ability to work in groups.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Remain on site as the contact and adult monitor for minor staff during break days.
  • Coordinate at least one scheduled off-site trip for staff each weekend and at least one on site group activity.
  • Monitor location and sing-in for all visitors and ensure their exit 1 hour prior to curfew.
  • Secure public areas after curfew and reopen for breakfast.
  • Ensure staff refrigerator is stocked with food designated by Food Service Manager. Prepare and serve meals as needed.
  • Ensure that child protection policies are observed on break days including:
    • Monitor and keep logs of minor staff locations.
    • Adherence to curfew and use of staff sign-in log and enforce with minors.
    • Keep undated parent authorized transportation lists for minors.
    • Check in with staff after each weekend and ensure everyone is accounted for at the First Day meeting.

General Duties:

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to campers
  • Attend and participate in programs and spiritual activities.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of cabins and outside areas.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Youth Program Specialist, Divisional Youth Secretaries and/or Camp Administrator

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on a continuous basis for up to 15-20 minutes or prolonged periods at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility and grounds.

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases
  • Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Work around dust, odor and high noise levels

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid drivers license and acceptable driving record.
