We operate in Esri and 3-GIS systems to manage our fiber optic network, make data more available to users, integrate with other enterprise systems, share story maps and dashboards internally and externally, and conduct analysis on the digital divide, in addition to many other projects.
The Business Systems GIS & Data Analyst will participate in Business Systems-related projects requiring GIS data.
- Work with our users to define data needs.
- Help develop and maintain geospatial databases.
- Use GIS to perform spatial analysis and database development, extraction, and manipulation to support a variety of Merit’s projects.
- Converts data received from internal and external sources to make them usable in the GIS.
- Maintain metadata and documentation, perform topology checks, and other data quality checks to identify and correct errors or omissions in data.
- Perform fiber optic data entry and quality control analysis on existing network data.
Finally, the Business Systems GIS & Data Analyst will participate in service delivery to external parties related to GIS, data collection, and mapping. You will be within the Technology Services department reporting to the Director of Business Systems. You will work with the Senior GIS & Data Analyst on a daily basis.

Responsibilities*
Service Delivery: (75%)
Provide GIS mapping and data analysis assistance as part of Merit’s “Michigan Moonshot” broadband data collection service engagements. (E)
Provide dashboards and visualizations of important data and findings.
Provide support to research projects that require geospatial data analysis. (E)
Service Support: (25%)
- Contribute to the strategic development of Merit’s GIS data analysis projects and "Michigan Moonshot” service roadmap. (E)
- Develop and maintain database schemas for relevant systems. (E)
- Help with fiber optic data entry and quality control analysis on existing data to position GIS systems as the source of truth for network infrastructure data. (E)
- Help with the data validation, error checking, and data mismatch resolution in multiple databases in partnership with other departments at Merit to ensure accurate enterprise data.
Skills You Have
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Desire to provide exceptional service.
- Demonstrated experience with GIS, database, and IT service technologies, including 3-GIS and Esri/ArcGIS.
- Demonstrated SQL skills (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle).
- Experience with data visualization and reporting.
- Programming experience in R and Python.
- Fluency with conducting statistical analysis, such as regressions and predictive analysis.
- Fluency with Microsoft Excel (can perform complex functions).
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with the ArcGIS API for JavaScript.
- Understanding of networking technology and topology.
- Experience with Qualtrics or survey data extraction and manipulation.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. The work schedule will be determined by the position supervisor and may change if necessary. There may be some occasional work required outside of established schedule, which may include weekends and holidays. Typical work schedule is 8am – 5pm, Monday through Friday for most staff. This is a term-limited position for a duration of approximately 18 months from the date of hire; dependent upon the availability of work and funding.
You will work within Merit's existing hybrid work environment, spending time in Merit's office as determined by the Director of Business Systems
Travel
Travel may be required.
