Stella Jones seeks to add a Lumber Buyer to the team in Tacoma, WA. In this role, the Lumber Buyer is responsible for procuring a broad range of lumber products to meet the quality, delivery and sales requirements of the division. This role will manage and develop valuable relationships with the vendor community.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Purchasing of lumber from mills throughout the western United States and Canada primarily, but aware of potential offshore options.
- Contributes to profitability via cost-effective and timely procurement of lumber products by purchasing products on a mill direct basis at or below market price.
- Develops and maintains mill direct relationships through on-site visits and phone contact that facilitate preferential mill relationships. Travels up to 30% of the time to mills, conferences, and other industry meetings.
- Works closely with mills to buy tallies advantageous to the company to maximize turnover and overall product cost.
- Interfaces with operations management to assist and ensure smooth plant operations and react to short term shortages and overage monitoring and correction.
- Accountable for monitoring inbound freight in terms of cost and timing to achieve lowest effective cost; on whitewood and schedules to avoid receiving back-up in plants.
- Responsible for prompt development of quotes on nonstandard items and communicates these quotes effectively to sales. Follows the production of quotes that turn to sales and ensures the timely delivery by the vendor
- Administers the issuing of purchase orders and reviews and authorizes payment of supplier invoices.
- Prepares statement for monthly bi-weekly Operations and Inventory meeting and forecasts market trends in terms of costing forecasts.
- Monitors open orders and enters new PO’s while effectively managing to a min max inventory.
- Monitors mill production and evaluates future market trends for advantageous lumber purchases not only for price but availability.
- Secondary cross functional responsibilities, vacation coverage within Lumber Purchasing Group.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business preferred; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years experience in lumber buying and sales, or equivalent experience.
- Negotiating skills – extensive knowledge and proven experience in negotiating the best vendor terms, pricing and market forecasting
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
- Solid decision making and strong analytical skills
- High level of accuracy and ability to perform and keep track of a multitude of tasks
- Detail and results oriented
- Ability to use SAP enterprise system to manage day to day purchasing tasks
- Excellent computer skills especially in Excel and SAP
