  • Salary Range: $77,980 - $118,920 annually (Determined by function, education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant. A 15% salary uplift is provided on top of base salary for positions that are worked in New York City or San Francisco, which is subject to change depending on market conditions.).

Part-Time Telework
: This position is a full-time role that offers part-time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. This position works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.


Position Summary

Bechtel seeks an experienced communications professional to execute and manage a variety of internal communications tasks for the High-Level Waste (HLW) team at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization project.


You will have an opportunity to create a communications program from the ground up that seeks to engage, recognize, and inform the growing team that is designing and will finish construction of the High-Level Waste Facility for the Department of Energy. You will work closely with Bechtel’s HLW leadership team to identify needs, build programs to drive the behavior and culture needed for a successful project, and execute those through internal communications products.


The successful candidate will be a good writer with experience developing content that can be used internally or externally in project and customer publications. The ideal candidate will have the diverse skills and creativity to develop communication products that build energy and excitement among the workforce.


Responsibilities

Internal Communications

  • Writes progress-related articles.

  • Writes feature articles on individual staff for internal and external publication.

  • Creates videos featuring team members and progress activities.

  • Drafts initial cuts of progress-related articles for use in external publications.

  • Develops content for, formats and distributes regular internal electronic newsletter.

  • Based on project needs, proactively recommends and writes messages to staff for HLW leadership

  • Assists Communications colleagues with miscellaneous activities such as VIP tours.

  • Provides support to Communications Manager in developing response to query statements for media on sensitive topics.

  • Proactively creates and executes internal communication campaigns.

  • Orchestrates communications to ensure they reach professional staff and a growing craft workforce.

  • Develops ideas for project newsletter publications, writes or adapts stories, assembles information and multimedia, consistent with HLW’s key messages.

  • Independently researches content and conducts interviews with staff and management.

  • Serves as liaison back to Communications team on HLW activities, priorities, and messaging.

  • Performs miscellaneous and other special assignments as assigned.

  • Receives operational guidance from the High Level Waste (HLW) Area Project Manager

  • Receives functional guidance from the WTP Communications Manager


External Communications

  • Monitors project progress for upcoming milestones or other newsworthy items

  • Drafts progress-related articles for use in external publications.

  • Supports Communication team’s efforts to share progress with and inform external stakeholders.


Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Mass Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field with 3 years related field experience. In lieu of formal degree, 9 years of related experience required.

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to quickly turnaround articles is a must.

  • Thorough knowledge of journalism styles and thorough familiarity with English grammar rules. Skills in editing and proofreading.

  • Ability to understand highly technical concepts and translate into engaging stories and multimedia products.

  • Must be self-motivated and take initiative in ensuring job duties are executed.

  • Demonstrated experience in external communications, internal communications and/or executive support.

  • Proven ability to build and manage positive relationships with Communications team members, peers and senior leadership.

  • Proficient user of the Microsoft Office suite of products.

  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite

  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.

  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)

  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Bechtel organization and/or experience working in a matrixed organization or project environment

  • Experience communicating progress on a construction site.

  • Ability to excel in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Skill in SharePoint or other web content management systems.

  • Strong relationship building and management skills with craft and professional staff.

  • Experience identifying newsworthy internal stories.

  • Ability to develop solutions to problems where guidelines are not well defined.
