Director of College Counseling

A Director of College Counseling position is now open for the 2023-2024 school year. The Director of College
Counseling will work predominantly with 11th and 12th grade students as they work through the college application process. The Director of College Counseling will report to the Principal. They will collaborate within a department that will include guidance counselors, social-emotional counselors, and alumni advisors to deliver a comprehensive model to support first generation students in their journey to and through college.

Cristo Rey San José provides underserved students with a rigorous college prep Jesuit Catholic Education. We are hosted at Five Wounds Parish on E. Santa Clara St. and Highway 101 serving East and Downtown San José students. We seek to improve on an already successful Cristo Rey model by adapting Blended Learning to personalize education for all students.

Cristo Rey San José Jesuit High School counselors will consistently work as a team to model and help all students reach the characteristics of the Cristo Rey San José Graduate at Graduation: loving, open to growth, committed to faith, striving for justice, and intellectually and professionally engaged.

Overview of Position
The Director of College Counseling works with the counseling team to create systems that will facilitate CRSJ students completing the college application and enrollment process. The Director of College Counseling’s role will incorporate teaching and engagement opportunities to support students and their families in creating and obtaining educational objectives. The Cristo Rey Network goal is to have 100% of graduates admitted to a 4-year university.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Implement and continue to develop a comprehensive 11th-grade and 12th-grade college counseling curriculum.
a. Plan and support college campus tours and college fair opportunities b. Schedule and promote college representative visits to CRSJ c. Facilitate curriculum delivery for College and Career Readiness (CCR) classes and Magis/Pride sessions d. Coach students in revision of application essays, personal statements, and college supplements e. Track application and teacher recommendation submissions to meet deadlines f. Write letters of recommendation (as needed) for approximately 60 seniors

g. Coordinate submission of school documents for senior caseload h. Review admission and financial aid offers with students and families to inform enrollment decisions i. Develop and support College Counseling workshops to engage parents, including Sophomore and Junior

Family Information programs and financial aid workshops j. Support 11th grade students in schedule planning, including credit recovery and achieving A-G eligibility status k. Promote and support the summer enrichment and pre-college program application process for rising seniors in collaboration with Academic Counselors l. Plan and implement College Retreat program for Junior class in collaboration with Academic Counselor assigned to that class m. Coordinate implementation of summer College Camps for essay writing and list development n. Responsible for CCR assignment tracking and data management utilizing proscribed templates and software (ie. Naviance, MAIA Learning, Google Drive)

2. Partnerships and Research
a. Actively researches all aspects of college counseling: financial aid, scholarships, applications, and admission criteria with a particular focus on institutions that have a strong commitment to the success and funding of first-generation students. b. Assists in updating student resources for scholarships and summer program opportunities c. Participate in ongoing professional development activities (ie.WACAC, NACAC, JHSCCA, and the

Cristo Rey Summit on College Success)

3. Collaboration
a. Collaborates with Guidance Counselors on program and protocol for meeting with 9th and 10th graders for college planning. b. Collaborates with the Principal and academic leadership team in submitting and updating UC/CSU course listings and ELC eligibility. c. Coordinates creation of a visual college going culture with those who oversee facilities, operations and student activities. d. Serve as an advisor to a small group of students one day a week (Pride); help students to navigate their developmental journey during their time at Cristo Rey. e. Serve as a moderator of student clubs and activities or a coach of athletic teams as needed. Serve as a chaperone/leader of field trips, immersion experiences, retreats, Christian Service opportunities, and other activities. f. Understand and appreciate the developmental and educational benefits of the school’s Corporate Work
Study Program. g. Participate in the school’s Adult Faith Formation program, committing to living and supporting the
Catholic, Jesuit mission of the school through continuous spiritual and personal growth and by serving as a leader of faith, service, and justice for our students.

4. Leadership/Director Responsibilities
a. Supervise and engage college counselors, guidance counselors, and alumni advisors to ensure that they are meeting success metrics for the college application, enrollment, and persistence process. b. Distribute caseloads evenly amongst the team members in a manner that will ensure success - caseload size, eligibility and competitiveness, c. Meet with college counselors, guidance counselors, and alumni advisors on a weekly basis to ensure they have the support needed to meet department goals. d. Distribute responsibilities amongst the team to ensure capacity is well spread out, and e. Lead the college counseling, guidance counseling, and alumni advising department in short term and long term goal setting through vertical alignment. f. Oversee college counseling budget. g. Engage with donors and supporters, provide updates about the work of college counseling and alumni advising.

h. Provide current student data and other information to highlight the impact of college counseling to donors and supporters, as well as keep the website current. i. Collaborate with advancement to brainstorm how to highlight college counseling and alumni advising at upcoming donor/supporter visits, and key events, such as College Signing Day.

Qualifications:
Successful applicants will embody the mission-commitment, intellectual curiosity, openness to growth, and optimism that are central to the character of our team. In addition, they will meet or exceed the following requirements:

● Bachelor’s degree required, relevant Master’s degree preferred
● Experience working with young adults in the college admission process
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with a wide range of individuals and constituencies
● Current California Driver’s License
● Experience planning events
● Excellent writing skills
● Organized with the ability to advance multiple projects simultaneously
● Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and as a member of a team
● Ability to collect and analyze data
● Ability to train and manage volunteers
● Experience in college counseling and knowledge of the college admission and financial aid application process
● Available to facilitate occasional evening and weekend programming, and college visits during some school breaks.

Preferred:

● Fluent in Spanish (Strong preference)
● Knowledge of Student Information Systems (ie. Powerschool, Schoology, Naviance)
● Commitment to Ignatian Education
● Prior experience working with schools or programs serving first generation college students like Cristo Rey

Schools, Teach for America, Americorps, KIPP, Alliance for Catholic Education, or Nativity/Miguel Schools is a plus.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION

● Range between $67,601 and $130,349 on a salary schedule based on education and years of experience. Full time employees are eligible for the following benefits: medical, dental, vision, and retirement. Employees’ premiums are covered for medical, dental and vision at 100% and dependents at 50% if elected. This position is eligible for enrollment in the group voluntary retirement plan – 403b.
