Summary
The Maintenance Services Department Central Shops within Facilities and Operations is seeking a talented design and project management professional with a background in design and fabrication. The University of Michigan maintains in-house casework, millwork, metal fabrication and sign-making capabilities. This position will improve workforce productivity and efficiency through customer engagement and development of detailed drawings, selection and procurement of materials, and coordination of the fabrication and installation. Responsibilities*
Act as the Fabrication Shop primary point of initial engagement with planned jobs.
- Review new Fabrication Shop planned jobs in CMMS for completeness, including customer schedule requirements and full description of customer need.
- Evaluate feasibility of design ideas for constructability, appearance, safety, function, serviceability, budget and other characteristics.
- Encourage stewardship of University resources by determining best-value and sustainable solutions, including use of commercial off-the-shelf options for all new work.
Assist customers, architects and engineers with developing rough concepts and design intent into detailed plans.
- Conduct field verification with on-site measurements and checks.
- Prepare sketches of ideas and illustrations, detailed drawings and renderings using CAD/CAM and other relevant design and modeling software for fabrication projects.
- Develop time and material cost estimates for customer approval prior to start of work.
Coordinate planned work packages which may include drawings, craft-hours and material take-offs, job hazard analysis and safety checklists, and quality control requirements.
- Collaborate with Tradespersons to convert drawings and imagery to CAM/CNC and other shop equipment file formats as required by shop and fabrication method.
- Coordinate with Supervisors to provide special skill requirements, manuals, procedures, tools or equipment.
- Coordinate permits and inspection requirements.
- Utilize the electronic job library to house detailed job plans.
- Attend Work Management Planning Meetings and training to ensure the Centrals Shops are up-to-date on the latest Maintenance Services processes and policy guidance.
Submit purchase requests for approval to Material Services or the Facilities and Operations Procurement Office.
- Identify internal and external sources and purchase requests through University CMMS or procurement processes.
- Utilize strategic contracts for materials and labor services when available.
- Coordinate reception and tracking of materials with relevant Supervisors.
Breakdown work requirements into logical steps, coordinate resources and provide support during fabrication and installation.
- Coordinate with relevant Supervisors and Schedulers to develop weekly and daily Skilled Trades schedules for relevant shops. Make considerations for efficient use of resources and equipment.
- Conduct quality control inspections at critical stages of fabrication and installation.
- Review jobs during fabrication process to validate and improve time estimates, fabrication methods and solicit Skilled Trades feedback.
As required, provide oversight and coordination of Fabrication Shop employees in support of shop supervision.

Required Qualifications*
At least three years of experience in project development and planning in an industrial fabrication, manufacturing or construction environment.
Experience or equivalent education using AutoCAD, Revit, Fusion 360 and other conventional CAD/CAM/CNC and design software.
Ability to provide material and cost estimates, and refine over time without encumbering skill trades to develop.
Prior experience in the use of safety measures and ability to interpret applicable MIOSHA regulations, perform job hazard analysis and communicate proper safety mitigations with written plans.
Ability to survey projects through all phases of work to include field measurements and quality control checks.
Understanding of quality control and quality assurance planning and field execution.
Ability to interpret architectural drawings, specifications and design guidelines, make material selections and performing material and equipment take-offs.
Ability to coordinate multiple planning tasks in a fast-paced production environment.
Prior positions that demonstrate ability to communicate with a diverse group of people.
Accurate and acute written and oral communication skills.
Desired Qualifications*
Bachelor’s Degree in a technical discipline, preferably industrial design, construction, engineering or similar.
Project management certification.
Ability to use and/or learn a variety of computer programs including and/or equivalent to Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), reporting, procurement and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Basic knowledge of facilities systems and management processes.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday 7am - 3:30pm
Due to the nature of this position, working after hours might be needed.
