Reports to: Landscape Maintenance Supervisor

Supervises: Part-Time Seasonal staff


BASIC FUNCTION

The Horticultural Specialist will be responsible for the growing conditions of assigned flower beds throughout the District during the bedding season. This includes seasonal bed preparations, plant material installation, regular maintenance, watering, disease identification and weeding. In addition this position will perform skilled and semi-skilled landscape maintenance. Safe operation of equipment and tools related to the maintenance of ornamentals is necessary. Training and supervision of seasonal staff will also be a part of the job responsibilities.


Seasonal, April – October. Annual hours will not exceed 1450.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists in the management of district-wide horticulture operations including seasonal staff assigned to horticulture operations.
  • Read and lay out landscape designs from provided drawings.
  • Provides design changes or creative input to develop new planting bed designs. Works with supervisor to improve horticulture operations.
  • In a self-directed manner completes daily bed watering and maintenance on weekends.
  • Installs and maintains all flower beds including annuals, perennials, and landscape improvements.
  • Applications of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers on plant material in greenhouse and planting beds maybe required.
  • Identify turf and ornamental diseases.
  • Inspect parks and clean up debris.
  • Inspect, cleans, maintains and performs routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Supervise flower bed maintenance crews as needed.
  • Prepare reports and plans relating to the horticulture.
  • Complete assigned documentation in relation to watering route completion and work orders.
  • Operates Park District vehicles including towing trailers

OTHER DUTIES

  • Assist administrative staff with special maintenance requests.
  • May be required to perform overtime work as requested or required, including weekends.
  • Assist patrons with providing information as requested.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures as outlined in the Park District Safety and Crisis Manuals
  • Coordinates activities to successfully collaborate with district staff performing maintenance in the same area.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Makes recommendations to the Landscape Supervisor for future planning and plant supply needs on a seasonal basis.
  • Opens/Closes maintenance center on weekends as assigned.


POSITION QUALIFICATION

Education: High school diploma or equivalent with additional horticultural skills.

Must be at least 18 years of age and poses a valid driver’s license.


Experience: Two years related experience with turf, annual, perennial, and ornamental plant maintenance required.


Certifications: Valid Illinois Driver’s License required.

Maybe required to obtain Illinois Pesticide Operator’s License.
