Department/Organization: 218142 - AL Disability Advocacy Prog (ADAP)
Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm
Job Summary: The Legal Assistant, under limited supervision, maintains a substantial and diverse work load, with a high degree of accuracy. Assists attorneys and advocates in specialized workgroups with day-to-day operations of the ADAP program. Oversees general office, administrative and secretarial duties with some variety and complexity.
Additional Department Summary: ADAP is the statewide protection and advocacy system for the state of Alabama. ADAP works to achieve fairness and justice for Alabamians with disabilities. We provide legally-based advocacy services; investigate allegations of abuse and neglect against persons with disabilities; participate in legislative and regulatory advocacy work; and conduct education and outreach about disability rights
Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and at least three (3) years of progressively responsible office experience; OR an Associates degree in secretarial science, office administration, legal assistant, or paralegal and two (2) years of progressively responsible office experience; OR a Bachelor's degree and one (1) year of progressively responsible office experience.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must be eligible to become a Notary Public. Upon hire, the successful applicant will immediately submit to a background investigation conducted by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (Declaration for Federal Employment, OMB No. 3206-0182). Continued employment is contingent on passing this background investigation. Requires occasional in-state travel (4-6 times per year). Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
Skills and Knowledge: Requires basic knowledge in the usage of personal computers and standard application software (such as, word processing, spreadsheet, and database management). Knowledge in internet research. Incumbent must be able to perform multiple task, have the ability to analyze and prioritize issues. Must be able to maintain confidentiality and work independently. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of standard office equipment a must. Ability to understand social service delivery systems which will impact individuals with disabilities. Exceptional writing and editing skills. Ability to establish and sustain good working relationships with outside agencies and contacts. Ability to decipher legal and medical documents. Good organizational skills. Must have good interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Concur and related UA purchasing/procurement practices.
