The successful candidate will be a member of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine. This individual will provide outpatient and inpatient care for patients with liver disease, patients awaiting transplantation, and patients following their liver transplantation; will lead quality improvement and protocol development and maintenance for the liver disease and transplant program; will serve as the UNOS-designated liver transplant physician; and will be expected to participate in overall strategic development of the Primary Children’s Liver Care Center. Clinical activities are carried out at Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH), which is a 289-bed Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake, City, Utah. In 2024, a second PCH campus is scheduled to open in Lehi, Utah. The liver transplant program has performed >280 liver transplants since its inception (>10% are altruistic or related living donors), with 72 liver transplants performed in the last 5 years. The program has three pediatric hepatobiliary surgeons who perform advanced surgical procedures and four providers with Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Certificates of Added Qualification. Neither small bowel nor lung transplantations are performed at Primary Children’s. It is one of the only centers in the country with a pediatric-specific ERCP / advanced endoscopy program performed at the Children’s Hospital.

The Division currently has 15 physicians, four advanced practice clinicians, four registered nurses, and three pediatric GI fellows. The Division will expand to >20 faculty in the next 3 years. The Division has all pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition clinical services represented except for small bowel transplantation. Additional programs include a gastrointestinal Motility Disorders Center, a multidisciplinary IBD program with close collaboration with an IBD surgery, close collaboration with the Cystic Fibrosis Center, Food Allergy and Eosinophilic Disorders Clinic, the Esophageal and Airway Treatment Center, a Feeding and Swallowing Center, a comprehensive nutrition center, an Aerodigestive Clinic, a Home Enteral Feeding Transitions program (post-NICU) and a multidisciplinary Colorectal Center.

The University of Utah is also the central site for the Pediatric PSC Consortium and has new research programs in newborn screening for biliary atresia. A Certificate of Added Qualification in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology is preferred, though if not held, the successful candidate must satisfy the criteria to serve as the UNOS-designated Liver Transplant Physician.
