Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow of Oral Microbiome Research for the Department of Oral Biology within the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM). Under the direction of the Assistant Professor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will support work focused on the human oral microbiome, investigating the influence of early life factors (such as, HIV, diet, and the use of antibiotic) on the oral microbiome, as well as projects focused on interactions between oral and gut microbiomes.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs research with a focus on investigating microbial metabolic mechanisms associated with the maintenance of dental or systemic health.
  • Applies meta-transcriptomics and genome wide association computational approaches to correlate genes with health assoicated phenotypes.
  • Processes and analyzes large sequence datasets.
  • Assists with the preparation of grant proposals, presentations and publications.
  • Develops and submits his/her own NIH training (K) proposal.
  • Actively seeks new collaborative projects within the department and externally.
  • Supervises the undergraduate or master’s or other graduate students.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in molecular and computational biology, genomics, molecular epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Experience with analyzing next-generation sequence data, omics analysis (in particular amplicon sequencing, whole genome sequencing, RNAseq and metabolomic data), and gene expression data.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to problem-solve and plan/carry out research projects and work on own initiative, taking personal responsibility for delivery of work.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential with the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels.
  • Must have good presentation skills.
  • Strong publication record with a background in microbial community dynamics.
  • Knowledge in Linux/bash.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with metratranscriptomics and systems biology.
