Position Focus:
As part of a team under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Chris Moore, the Research Assistant (RA) will support research in the emergency department (ED) around the development of automated intelligence (AI) for point-of-care lung ultrasound and ultrasound in patients with abdominal free fluid. The primary responsibility will be to identify, recruit, consent and enroll patients in the ED who present with shortness of breath (lung studies) or abdominal free fluid (FAST study), and to perform and record ultrasound(s) on these patients. This will include patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection. The RA will be provided with training and personal protective equipment (PPE) consistent with institutional protocols regarding COVID related research. Not all subjects will be suspected or confirmed COVID. The ultrasounds may be performed by other physicians taking care of the patient, but may also be performed by the RA after appropriate training. In some cases, subjects may be followed longitudinally and may have ongoing data collected in the inpatient floors and/or intensive care units.
Required responsibilities of the RA include assisting in research design and planning, data collection and database management, participant recruitment and screening, conducting, coordinating with the research and clinical staff, and ensuring appropriate follow-up and IRB protocol compliance.
Essential Duties
1. Researches and collects data through site or home visit intakes; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. 3. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. 4. Recruits study participants and ensures that subject recruitment and follow-up are completed per protocol procedures. 5. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May assist research and support staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Proven ability with data entry, data management, cleaning, and basic analysis. Demonstrated ability with Excel.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including clinical populations, older adults, and children and ability to maintain professionalism.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, in particular with study documentation such as IRB materials and study manuals of procedures.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to work in a fast-paced setting with multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Ability to work independently with self-initiative and to problem solve.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Flexibility and ability to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Prior human subject clinical research experience preferred. Prior clinical experience.
