Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Self-Contained Behavior Paraprofessional - Elementary

EXEMPTION STATUS:
Non-exempt

REPORTS TO:
Principal/Special Programs Department

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
10 months

Primary Purpose:
Assist in providing instruction and support for students with challenging behaviors.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification
Associate Degree, two years of study at an institute of higher learning, or meet formal academic assessment
Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to work with students with pervasive developmental disabilities
Ability to assist with classroom instruction
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and interpersonal skills

Experience
Experience working with children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support
  • Assist teachers with lesson planning, lesson modeling, classroom management, and behavior management.
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom and learning environment.
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining administrative records and preparing reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers, as needed.
  • Provide intervention support as identified in the student’s IEP.
Student Management
  • Help manage behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining dangerous student behavior as needed.
  • Assure student success as determined by the state and district curriculum and assessments.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Assume responsibility and adapt to each student’s special academic, physical, communicative, and emotional need and assist students according to individual needs for instruction.
  • Assist in supervising students throughout the day; inside and outside the classroom; in the cafeteria, in the hallway, at the drop-off/pick-up line and bus stop, on the bus, on the playground; before and after school hours when in the school’s care; and at other times and locations as assigned.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, material, and facilities.
Communication
  • Communicate to the teacher all problems, concerns and special needs related to students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, teachers, supervisors, other staff, volunteers and parents.
  • Articulate the district’s mission and goals to the community and solicit community support.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Maintain familiarity with district initiatives to better serve the needs of students.
  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Pursue continuous improvement and growth in knowledge of behavior intervention strategies, methodologies, and analysis.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Standard classroom equipment, computer, peripherals, other electronic devices
  • Posture:Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
  • Motion:Frequent walking; frequent repetitive hand motions, keyboarding, use of mouse, wrist flexion/extension
  • Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment
  • Environment: Work inside and outside; regular exposure to noise; occasional exposure to contagious disease
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruption
