WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Senior Associate Director of Development, Enduring Earth (Sr. ADoD) will manage TNC’s private fundraising efforts for the Enduring Earth partnership—a ten-year collaboration between TNC, World Wildlife Fund, Pew Charitable Trusts and a philanthropic donor to protect more than 670 million hectares of important places around the world for people, biodiversity and climate using a mechanism called Project Finance for Permanence (PFP).

The Sr. ADoD will serve as TNC’s primary point of contact for private fundraising efforts for the Enduring Earth partnership. They will manage the Enduring Earth fundraising plan and all related efforts, including coordinating with communicators, fundraisers, external affairs staff and executive leaders across the organization to mobilize resources for the partnership. They will serve on partnership committees and task forces and work closely with fundraisers at TNC and the partner organizations to manage the joint prospect portfolio, facilitate joint strategy calls and develop joint proposals and reports. The Sr. ADoD will also serve on internal steering committees and working groups for individual TNC-led PFPs. With Regional Directors of Development, they will analyze fundraising feasibility and develop and support implementation of fundraising plans for each TNC-led PFP. They will coordinate with TNC relationship managers regarding prospect-specific strategy development, cultivation and solicitation and may be in cultivation and solicitation conversations with volunteer leaders and donors. The Sr. ADoD understands and applies complex principles of developing donor strategies and builds strong relationships across TNC and with the partners. They are capable of discussing Enduring Earth as well as other priorities of the Conservancy and may be asked to support fundraising efforts for other initiatives or programs in addition to Enduring Earth. They understand organizational budgets and are proficient utilizing this knowledge to build proposal budgets. They have knowledge of charitable giving, particularly private foundations, operating foundations and Donor Advised Funds. The Sr. ADoD will staff senior leaders as a moves manager as appropriate. They will be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database.

Responsibilities & Scope

  • Decisions may have program-wide impact, affect staff in non-program areas, and bind the organization financially or legally.
  • Direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements; be alert to ethical compliance issues.
  • Financial responsibility for setting and meeting fundraising objectives, evaluating results, and developing corrective strategies.
  • Implement and lead multiple collaborative and complex projects, directing work of staff, managing budget, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability.
  • Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.
  • Maximum opportunity to act independently, resolves complex issues within scope.
  • May supervise support or administrative staff.
  • Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
  • Travel frequently and on short notice, work long and weekends as needed.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
  • With TNC and partner relationship managers as well as external affairs staff, oversee joint prospect portfolio of 150+ to reach Enduring Earth’s overall fundraising goal of roughly $2 billion in public and private funds by 2030.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years related experience.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with constituents such as major donors and corporations.
  • Experience in asking for and closing gifts of $75,000 or more, including planned gifts.
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Experience working with fundraising principles and practices.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in current and evolving trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS (not required)

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience designing and implementing fundraising strategies, including cultivation, solicitation and recognition strategies.
  • Experience determining an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
  • Experience educating and informing prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
  • Advanced knowledge of complex charitable gift planning.
  • Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy, and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
  • Proven experience negotiating complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
