In this role, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of duties related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of highways, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure. You will work in a team environment to operate light and heavy equipment. Work alongside other full-time employees with duties ranging from sign replacement, herbicide application, roadway level-up, edge repair, tree trimming, litter pick-up, project inspection and much more, and assist with various construction and maintenance projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, the ability to work well in a team environment, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills. Salary Range for each Position Level:
We offer company-sponsored CDL training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.

General Transportation Tech I:
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
General Transportation Tech II:
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
General Transportation Tech III:
Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
General Transportation Tech I, II, and III:
- Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
- Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintains rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, and accident forms.
- Performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional essential job duties for a General Transportation Tech II include:
- Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
- Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
- Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional essential job duties for a General Transportation Tech III include:
- Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other employees.
- Inspects and processes damage claims.
- Verifies and processes maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Education:
General Transportation Tech I, II & III: No formal education required
Experience:
General Transportation Tech I: None
General Transportation Tech II: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. * (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated parttime equivalent)
General Transportation Tech III: 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. * (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent)
- Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
General Transporation Tech I & II
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
General Transportation Tech III
- Must have Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of application.
