ARCHBISHOP DAMIANO SCHOOL POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Instructional Paraprofessional/One-to-One Support
Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time
Reports To: Assistant Principals/Executive Director
We are looking for a Instructional Paraprofessional/One-to-One Support to join our team at Archbishop Damiano School.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Instructional Paraprofessional/One-to-One Support assist students with special needs under the direction of a certified classroom teacher, performing a variety of tasks relating to the physical, emotional health, safety, and instructional needs of students in a classroom setting. Due to the varied and individual needs of each student, the Paraprofessional may provide a variety of support and assistance and should be flexible, adjusting to student needs.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS:
Assists the teacher or designated supervisor with instructional activities in an exceptional education classroom or one-to-one. Assists student(s) in reinforcing material already presented through special efforts and repetitions. Assists student(s) with self-care areas to build independence. Prepares and maintains files and reports. Assists teacher in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks. Assists the teacher in providing individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday. Reinforces acceptable student behavior in a consistent and positive manner. Encourages proper care and use of school facilities, property and equipment and participates in curriculum development programs as required. Assists with toileting student(s), changing diapers and personal hygiene. Escorts student(s) when necessary and redirect student(s) when necessary. Assists student(s) with mobility needs. Guides children in working and playing harmoniously with other children. Helps to maintain individual records for each student and collects and displays suitable materials for educational displays. Performs other related tasks as required.
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Duties performed typically in school settings. Performs paraprofessional work assisting a classroom teacher or designated supervisor in maintaining an environment favorable to student learning and personal growth. Occasional movement of students in wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION FOR THE POSITION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Associate degree, preferred.
- Prior experience working with children, preferably in a learning environment.
- Approved Criminal History Review from NJ Dept. of Ed. Office of Criminal History Review.
- Ability to lift and position students alone and with another person as required.
- Lifting is performed from various levels and weight can vary up to 70 pounds.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships.
- Ability to learn new task quickly.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Some experience working with special needs children.
- Knowledge of school environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively with children with special needs.
- Ability to provide behavior management and crisis intervention.
- Ability to work as a team member providing services to children with special needs.
- Ability to use sound judgment and knowledge of student behaviors and district policies to make decisions.
