Summary:
Responsible for providing patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures, functions as a delegated agent of the physician and practices under the supervision of a licensed independent practitioner. Committed to enhanced patient care and continuous quality improvement that increases knowledge and technical competence. Use independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic sonographic procedures. A fundamental approach to the safe use of diagnostic medical ultrasound is to apply elements of the As Low As Reasonably Achievable Principle Including lowest output power and the shortest scan time consistent with acquiring the required diagnostic information. Uses proper patient positioning, tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to promote patient comfort and prevent compromised data acquisition or musculoskeletal injury to the diagnostic medical sonographer.

- Standard Work Duties: Ultrasonographer (PRN)
- Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations and sonographic ally guided invasive procedures in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information. Ensure that the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of 'medical necessity.' Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient's inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures.
- Use proper patient positioning tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition or musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer.
- Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the diagnostic medical sonography examination ordered by the supervising physician in accordance with professional and facility protocols.
- Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic sonography procedures. Apply independent judgment during the sonography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the examination images. As necessary, acquire additional ultrasound imaging to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for the interpreting physician. Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination. Review examination images, synthesize examination results, and prepare preliminary findings.
- Perform quality control procedures to ensure that the ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels. Exercise responsibility to ensure that the ultrasound equipment is functioning accurately. Provide education and training to sonographers in the utilization of new equipment features/benefits and scanning techniques.
- Document any incidental findings that might impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician. Exercise responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility reports, database records and logs.
- Verifies that all images are sent to PACS, completed and charged appropriately in the RIS system and all necessary documentation completed in the EHR.
- Assist with the mentoring and professional development of sonography students
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential:
- High School or Equivalent
- Associate Degree
Education equivalent experience:
Essential:
- Completion of an Allied Health program in Ultrasound
- Allied Health program in Ultrasound
Other information:
Certifications Essential: Registered and maintained by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one of the following specialties; Abdomen (AB) or OB/GYN (OB/GYN) or Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Sonography ARRT (S).
Certifications Preferred: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one of the following specialties; Abdomen (AB) or OB/GYN (OB/GYN) and RVT (VT)
