YCS is looking for a Community Organizer who, under the direction of the YCS Associate Executive Director, will focus on engaging 30 community member parents with lived experience in the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) system to access needed services by building the community’s ability to advocate for policy, systems and environmental (PSE) changes. The Community Organizer will develop sound organization strategies based on articulated concerns by the community members and partner organizations, recruit community leaders, assist with running member meetings and facilitate training sessions. The Community Organizer will research concerns to advance the group solutions based on need. This is for a specific project ending in April of 2024, there may be other YMCA opportunities.

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Engage/organize parents of children through age 22 who are members of the Regional Center of Orange County
  • Listen, advocate, consult, educate, partner with parents to form sustainable problem-solving strategies
  • Facilitate participatory decision making and action process with parents to determine and implement PSE change strategies for children and youth in Orange County, ages 0-22 with diagnosed or suspected co-occurring Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and mental health needs, to improve access and equity for needed care for both
  • Partner with organizations involved with the Advocacy for People with Disabilities Collaborative to follow the work plans of the project
  • Recruit and Outreach to other community members/organizations that will assist in the process of creating change and fosters leaders in their communities
  • Research community needs to determine what policy change are necessary and work with other members of the project to address change as necessary
  • Provide presentations to the partner organizations and others as required
  • Collect data, report outcomes regularly as defined by the project
  • Work with marketing to develop needed materials for community empowerment
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Hiring Criteria: The following are the minimum qualifications which an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Education & Certification:

Master’s Degree in Social Work with an emphasis on Community Organization, Social Welfare or equivalent degree preferred.

Experience & Background:

  • Two years of Community Organization in the human services realm: engagement, communication, technical skills, strategic planning, project management, tracking and training.
  • Bilingual/bicultural Spanish

Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent planning, organizing, and leadership/supervisory skills. •
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Windows/Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong customer and results orientation.
  • Ability to interact effectively at all levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Ability to be an effective member of project teams.
