JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Information Technology Services (ITS), is seeking a highly technical and self-motivated Application Administrator 1 or 2. This position will join an established team of application administrators and software developers located on the Storrs campus. Under the direction of a Team Lead, this service-oriented position will work closely with the University’s Facilities organization to provide highly technical and innovative software solutions.

This technical role combines the skills of a systems analyst/administrator, business analyst, and project manager. In addition to providing technical support for applications, the position will perform software upgrades, testing, and implementations. The candidate must work and communicate well at multiple organizational levels with customers, vendors, peers, and management. They must be effective at research, problem-solving, and documentation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

For the Application Administrator 1

  • Identifies and resolves system errors. Consults with functional and technical staff to resolve problems in application systems.
  • Uses standard diagnostic techniques to analyze, identify, and solve problems.
  • Monitors applications to ensure data integrity, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Develops and maintains subject matter expertise on both frontend and backend technologies related to application systems.
  • Collaborates with users to elicit and document business requirements.
  • Writes and executes data queries to support business and technical needs using standard SQL client tools.
  • Develops reports and analyzes data using standard reporting tools.
  • Works with application vendors to submit, track and resolve system issues and errors.
  • Reports progress to users, colleagues, and management through formal written communications.
  • Uses support and project tracking systems to organize and communicate the status of assigned work.
  • Provides technical support, training, and consulting services to end users.
  • Authors and maintains administrative and technical documentation.
  • Supports senior technical personnel with the installation, upgrade, migration, and maintenance of application systems.
  • Supports technical projects as part of a project team.
  • Supports the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of University information as part of the overall University Information Security Program.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities for Application Administrator 2

  • Develops and maintains in-depth technical knowledge and the ability to design and support information technology services in a multi-tiered environment.
  • Writes and executes data manipulation queries to support business and technical needs using standard SQL client tools.
  • Works with vendors and management to develop or enhance applications.
  • Monitors applications to ensure they are configured in accordance with functional, technical, and performance expectations; this includes, but is not limited to, feature management, user access, firewall policy, and identity integrations.
  • Works with technical and functional staff to resolve system integration issues.
  • Provides business and systems analysis and assessment; gathers and documents business requirements and workflow processes; conceptualizes, recommends, demonstrates, and implements technology solutions.
  • Provides leadership and planning of technical software implementation processes; performs analysis and coordination of activities in support of projects.
  • Provides planning, testing, and execution of software upgrades and security mitigations for application systems.
  • Conducts research, reviews, tests, and evaluates potential new products or enhancements; writes summaries and reports. recommendations; research licensing and purchasing arrangements relative to potential software.
  • Contributes to technical projects as part of a cross-functional team.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

For the Application Administrator 1

  • Associate's degree and four years of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience OR six years of related experience.
  • Excellent collaboration, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Experience working with MS Office 365 applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, problem solve, and implement technology solutions.
  • Experience identifying, gathering, and documenting business processes and requirements.
  • Experience configuring, supporting, and managing moderately sized applications in a multi-tiered Windows and/or Linux Server environment.
  • Experience writing basic SQL statements.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Application Administrator 2

  • Associate's degree and six years of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree and four years of related experience OR eight years of related experience.
  • Experience managing applications in a Windows or Linux server multi-tiered environment; including monitoring and administration of application-specific services, logs, and scheduled tasks.
  • Experience writing and executing SQL statements to manipulate data.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability on moderately sized technology projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

For the Application Administrator 1

  • Experience with data analysis tools for reporting and analysis.
  • Experience writing software or scripts to support applications.
  • Experience supporting web service, API, flat-file, or similar system integrations.
  • Familiarity with basic networking concepts.
  • Experience working in higher education.

Additional Preferred Qualifications for Application Administrator 2

  • Experience writing basic programs using Bash, PowerShell, or similar scripting tools.
  • Experience with Boomi, Pentaho, Informatics, or similar integration platforms.
  • Experience with web service API’s for data integration or reporting.
  • Experience with JIRA or similar SDLC software.
  • Experience supporting software applications in the areas of facilities operations, parking services, fleet/fuel management, campus mail, or construction.
  • Experience supporting cloud-hosted applications.
  • Familiarity with MS Office365 Power Apps.
  • Familiarity with application security, privacy, and data protection best practices.

This is a full-time, permanent position. Classification and salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s background and experience. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
