Summary

Nighthawk is a rockin’ cellar bar featuring eclectic music, fast-friendly service, nostalgic pub food, cheap drinks, and a lively + energetic late-night atmosphere.

The premise of Nighthawk was born out of an immense love of all forms of auditory art. Musicians and music lovers alike will feel right at home inside Nighthawk; One side of the room features a stage with a complete live band PA setup for artists to put on live performances throughout the week; The other side is outfitted with a DJ booth featuring Altec A5 speakers with Werner Jagusch crossovers, a Japanese Elekit 200b tube amp, three turntables with one setup for 78s.

Nighthawk’s cuisine is overseen by renowned chef Johnny Leach (The Town Company, Del Posto, Momofuku). Beverage offerings champion cold draft beer, canned seltzer, and beloved mix drinks.

Job Overview

A Barback is responsible for assisting Nighthawk Bartenders in all aspects of service. This task should be handled in a friendly, courteous, helpful, timely, and professional manner resulting in a very high level of guest satisfaction. There is a heavy focus on stocking the bar during service, keeping the bar tidy, and washing and polishing all glassware brought to the bar.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintain complete knowledge of and comply with all departmental policies, service procedures and standards.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of correct maintenance and use of equipment. Use equipment only as intended.
  • Ensure maintenance of equipment by calling for repairs.
  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of work areas.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of table/seat numbers, hours of operation, and proper set up of the restaurant.
  • Maintain complete knowledge of all menu items, preparation methods, ingredients and quality standards of taste, appearance, texture, serving temperature, portion size and garnish.
  • Check station before, during, and after shift for proper set up and cleanliness and necessary equipment including glassware, china, silverware and linen.
  • Complete opening and closing side work as assigned and have all bar areas set according to departmental standards.
  • Greet guests in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Anticipate and service guests needs.
  • Be familiar with all Hotel Kansas City services/features and local attractions/activities to respond to guest inquiries.
  • Retrieve restaurant equipment from dining room by pushing, lifting, loading, and carrying trays up to 50lbs.
  • Clean tables and trays promptly and consistently reset all service-ware. Return condiments and other equipment to proper storage areas.
  • Ensure all service ware is in good condition, polished and in line with departmental standards.
  • Work closely and communicate with Nighthawk colleagues.
  • Assist in bar service when needed.
  • Serve drinks to guest as instructed.
  • Know how to properly use credit card system, and properly open and close out checks to departmental guidelines.
  • Communicate with Nighthawk Bar team on status of bar guests.
  • Perform any general cleaning tasks using standard hotel cleaning products to adhere to health standards.
  • Perform other duties as requested, such as cleaning unexpected spills and executing special guest requests.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Nighthawk Lead Bartender, Nighthawk General Manager and the Director of Food and Beverage.


Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency preferred, but not required.
  • Must obtain Kansas City Liquor License and Food Handlers Card.

Experience:

  • Basic knowledge of food and beverage preparations, service standards, guest relations, and etiquette.
  • Working knowledge of the appropriate table settings, service ware, and menu items.

Interaction/Skill Set:

  • Ability to read, speak, write and understand English sufficiently to understand menus, special promotions, and communicate with guests.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to transport large trays weighing up to 50lbs through a crowded room on a continuous basis throughout the shift.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and continuously perform essential functions for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to move up to 600lbs. with wheelchair assistance.
  • Ability to lift up to 75lbs. and to lift lighter objects overhead.
  • Ability to navigate varied floor surfaces.
