Job description
This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing accurate clerical work to help facilitate a smooth workflow within the department. The Behavioral Health Unit Coordinator's responsibilities require knowledge of departmental programs and a variety of operating policies and procedures.
Job Duties
  • Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand-offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
  • Collaborates with physicians, unit staff, social workers, referral sources, and placement sources to complete case management assessments for patients and support systems to facilitate the most appropriate and timely transition plan.
  • Demonstrate support for changes in practice designed to improve performance in collaboration with unit leadership.
  • Organizes discharges, handles phone calls, maintains unit medical records, reviews information requests, and manages the daily staffing meeting with providers, social work, pastoral care, unit staff.
  • Obtains medical records from outside facilities as requested.
  • Performs audits and inventory checks under the direction of the Shift Supervisor and Manager.
  • Serves as a liaison between unit physicians and other Mercy departments to ensure timely and quality care delivery.
  • Completes supply order entry accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide physical interventions, when necessary, to maintain safety while using safe techniques and following policy and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in operations of computer, fax machine, filing systems and telephone systems.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with patients, staff, referral sources, and visitors
  • Ability to work in a safety-conscious manner which ensures that safe work practices are used
  • Creates a welcoming environment for all healthcare team members
  • Role Models exemplary customer service skills including verbal and non-verbal skills and proper phone etiquette
  • Knowledge of utilization management process, discharge planning, and managed care processes.
Professional Experience
  • One year of health care and/or secretarial experience preferred.
Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Current certification in patient population of unit or relevant experience in lieu of a degree required.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • CPI certification required.

Schedule: Full Time, Day, 0730 to 1530 M-F
