Job description

The GED test has opened doors to better jobs and college programs for more than 20 million graduates since 1942. The GED test is accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges and employers. As the creator of the one official GED test, GED Testing Service has a responsibility to ensure that the program continues to be a reliable and valuable pathway to a better life for the millions of adults without a high school diploma. The organization continues to develop several new, innovative programs like GEDWorks. GED Testing Service is a joint venture between the American Council on Education and Pearson.

The Communications & Stakeholder Engagement Manager is a critical role for the organization, as this person will lead strategic communications with key stakeholders and national organizations. It is an exciting time to be part of the GED Testing Service team, as we are developing new ways to connect GED students and grads with career training programs, jobs, apprenticeships, and colleges. Adult learners are critical to the nation’s economic development and job pipeline, and this role will help ensure that policymakers and media value their often-untapped potential.

The Manager will lead communications and help shape and maintain the brand voice for non-GED student stakeholders, including media, GED preparation/adult education programs, educators, policymakers/lawmakers, employers participating in the GEDWorks program, national literacy and advocacy organizations. They will work closely with the Director of Marketing and the State Relationships/accounts team. They will also collaborate with the Products and Pearson global communications team. This position may also assist with communications strategy for the Accelerated Pathways program.

GED leadership is strongly committed to initiatives, pilot programs, and partnerships that improve outcomes for underserved groups and communities. The Manager should have a strong understanding or desire to learn about the challenges facing these communities of learners.

This position reports to the Vice President of Global Operations & Assessment Services and will also frequently interact with the President of GED Testing Service.

Some of the responsibilities for the Manager include:

  • Develop, deliver and evaluate an annual multi-channel communications strategy.
  • Keep the pulse of GED® program visibility and sentiment regularly and provide information and feedback to GEDTS leaders on the state of the brand. This may include monitoring sentiment, mentions and media stories as needed.
  • Serve as primary media contact and often key spokesperson for the organization.
  • Prepare and manage communications materials and channels (e-newsletter, key web pages, social media posts, press releases).
  • Draft communications for the V.P. and President, such as monthly newsletter columns, LinkedIn posts, and occasionally speeches.
  • Develop the In Session e-newsletter content and strategy. In Session is delivered to 15,000+ stakeholders monthly.
  • Manage and develop a communications intern and/or temporary communication specialist.
  • Develop outreach strategies to strengthen partnerships and alliances.
  • Represent GED Testing Service to key national organizations and attend some state and national conferences.
