Cyberinfrastructure Engineer


Full-time, Regular, Exempt Position


The University of Maine System is accepting applications for a Cyberinfrastructure Engineer. This role provides advanced support to researchers and educators in the University of Maine System in three major areas of the Advanced Computing Group (ACG): high performance computing (HPC), cloud computing, and data management. The work location for this position is on the Orono campus of the University of Maine.


Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the annual salary range is between $67,000 - $75,000 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. The UMS is a recipient of the Wellness Councils of America’s Well Workplace Award and offers a wellness program.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • M.S. in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum three years’ experience required in relevant IT disciplines including:
    • Linux system administration
    • Programming in languages such as FORTRAN, C, C++, BASH, Perl, Python, R, and Go
    • Hardware/software debugging and deployment
    • Systems integration
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Work with other professionals and students in a team environment
  • Work closely with researchers and understand the needs and motivations
  • Experience in at least one field of research in order to relate to users of the ACG
  • Able to travel, mostly in-state, requiring a valid driver license

Preferred:

  • Experience in the following:
    • Installing, configuring, and operating an OpenStack cloud
    • Creating, configuring, and using virtual machine images for cloud systems
    • Building high performance computing and storage systems
    • Administration and use of a batch execution environment (e.g. SLURM, Torque, etc.)
    • Writing/compiling/modifying/running common scientific codes for HPC systems
    • High Availability (HA) computer systems
    • Containers: building, using, managing
    • Networking, particularly gigabit Ethernet, 10 gigabit Ethernet and Infiniband
    • Conducting research
    • Interacting with researchers from different disciplines
    • Entrepreneurial mindset and good creative thinking skills
