A Damage Assessment Team provides support to utility companies in the immediate aftermath of devastating events including hurricanes, tornadoes, severe winter storms, floods, and power outages. Teams typically deploy prior to the storm and are put on standby. Once the storm passes, our teams are deployed to scout areas and record and report the extent of damage to the power utility lines.

Our Damage Assessment Teams are a 2-person crew, and we will pair you up with another contractor if you do not have a partner to work with. When deployed you must use your own vehicle to perform this job. Some deployments require a vehicle with AWD or 4x4 capabilities. If you do not have this vehicle, on previous deployments, contractors have rented one. We can also partner you with someone who does have the required vehicle.

Basic Requirements:

  • You Must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license and be able to pass a background check
  • Understand this is an on-call position and we respond whenever we have a request from our client
  • Be reliable and able to travel on short notice
  • Have computer literacy skills and the ability to enter completed work details into an online system
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Own a smartphone and be comfortable utilizing it for work
  • Have basic PPE: hard hat, safety vest and safety boots with reinforced toe

Team Job description:

  • A Damage Assessment Team is a 2-person crew
  • You can provide 2-3 people to work with you as your partner to increase your availability to work
  • We will pair you up with another contractor if you do not have a partner to work with
  • Previous damage assessment experience is desired but not required.
  • Online training will be provided and must be completed by all contractors.
  • Identify primary and secondary electrical facilities including poles, primary wires, secondary wires, services, primary insulators, transformers, fuses, reclosers, substations, etc.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in distinguishing between energized versus de-energized lines and open/tripped versus closed protective devices.
  • Identify the difference between electrical, cablevision, and telephone lines.
  • Visually inspect all line segments, including the walking out of the facilities to visually verify no damage or other issues are present.

Required PPE and Equipment:

  • A vehicle with 4x4 may be required on some deployments. Contractor can rent this vehicle at their own expense.
  • A week's worth of environmentally appropriate clothes (no shorts), any necessary toiletries and any prescriptions should be packed and ready to go at all times.
  • All contractors must have rubber sole boots with safety toe. EH rated boots may be required on some deployments.

Compensation Details:

  • Contractors that use their own vehicle typically earn $350 to $450 a day.
  • Both the Damage Assessor and their partner are paid an hourly rate and the assignment is typically 16 hours a day, during daylight hours, until the completion of the event.
  • A daily vehicle allowance will be paid out for each day your vehicle was used in the field once the event is completed.
  • Contractors are deployed prior to the storm and are paid for up to 12 hours of standby pay while they wait for the storm to pass. If there is not enough damage to go into the field, contractors will demobilize from the event.
  • Drive time is paid to and from the event and lodging is provided.
  • Fuel expenses (to the event, during an event and leaving event) if not provided, are reimbursed. If it is not paid in the field, we bill and pay out reimbursements when the event is over.
  • If meals are not provided, a per diem is paid out.
  • Contractors are paid within 30 days of the completion of an event. This is a general maximum time; you can get paid earlier depending on the contract.
  • All positions treated and operate as independent (1099) contractors
