The Director of the Office of Teacher Education is responsible for ensuring the authentic and successful preparation of teacher candidates for careers in P-12 teaching through program accreditation, coordination with external and internal stakeholders, and student support efforts at Bemidji State University. In these efforts, the Director serves as the leader and main point of contact for communication and planning between members of the Bemidji State University Professional Education and Content Area faculty, Office of Teaching Education (OTE) staff, P-12 school representatives, and the OTE Advisory Board. The Director also proactively leads student outreach and support efforts, including organizing recruiting, orientation, and retention events and acting as the Education student advocate and facilitator. In the course of their duties, the Director regularly interacts with and receives extensive support from the academic advising, clinical experience, licensing, and accreditation/data specialists comprising the OTE.
Responsibilities of the Director of the Office of Teacher Education include:
- Being knowledgeable in all areas of the Office of Teacher Education (academic advising, clinical experience, licensing, and accreditation/data) and synthesizing and communicating OTE staff efforts/duties with BSU faculty, staff, and students.
- Serving as the Unit Leader for the purposes of PELSB and other accreditation reporting, interpretating, and communicating with campus stakeholders.
- Working with faculty and staff to develop policies and procedures relating to teacher licensure programs and in response to evolving PELSB and AAQEP regulations.
- Making final procedural and policy decisions for all BSU teacher licensure programs to ensure compliance with external accrediting bodies.
- Planning and directing the work activities of professional employees, as well as providing final recommendations for hiring, performance evaluations, professional development, and discipline within the OTE.
- Overseeing budgets and cost centers relating to OTE, including field experience and student teaching.
- Facilitating marketing of programs by working with academic departments, such as the Center for Extended Learning, Admissions, and Grad Studies.
- Facilitating student admission for conventional and non-conventional programs, in conjunction with the Academic Program Leader for Education Committee (APLE).
- Leading coordination and collaboration of all student teacher placements and field experience placements in local, regional and state-wide school districts.
- Leading outreach and retention efforts (serving as point of contact for students with concerns, leading student success efforts including working with members of the APLE to address “Navigate” concerns, designing and coordinating student engagement events).
- Leading implementation of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) measures.
- Responding to and actively helping support new (evidence-based) initiatives launched by faculty and staff.
Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for this position include:
- Earned Master’s degree in a related area of Education
- At least 5 years of administrative experience in higher education.
- Experience serving as a liaison between multiple stakeholders and levels of audiences.
- Ability to serve as credible expert for policies, procedures, and practices related to university, state, regional, and national requirements.
- Experience with accreditation standards (state, regional, or national).
- Experience with student management databases and software (as examples: ISRS, ImageNow, Starfish, and Navigate).
- Higher education teaching experience.
- A demonstrate commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
- Earned Doctorate in related area of Education.
- Knowledge of Minnesota PELSB Rule.
- Knowledge of Minnesota Tiered Licensure.
- Knowledge of Northern Minnesota P-12 schools.
- Knowledge of BSU teacher education programs.
- P-12 teaching experience.
