Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated Principal Research & Development Engineer. The successful candidate will participate in the design and development of next generation medical devices. The R&D role will utilize a variety of new and proven technologies to deliver life-changing medical devices to patients and clinicians in support of BSC’s mission.

This candidate will work with a team to develop new implant products for WATCHMAN, our left atrial appendage occlusion franchise. These investments in new technology will drive a robust pipeline for left atrial appendage occlusion that will keep BSC in a market leadership position.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating a strong team culture around high expectations and high performance
  • Facilitating crisp decision making around key technical issues
  • Leading technology integration and knowledge transfer within domain of responsibility
  • Providing clear communication to stakeholders at key technical updates
  • Leading the design & execution of structured experimental plans to drive data-based decisions.
  • Understanding the anatomy, clinical use cases and user interface requirements to drive design decisions.
  • Leveraging internal/external partners as necessary to achieve project objectives
  • Support and successfully contribute to project teams through the following activities: product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, process capability studies, research investigations (animal and clinical studies), report preparation, and process/test documentation.
  • Interfacing with Physicians/Cath Lab personnel to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices.
  • Providing work direction to technicians/entry-level engineers
  • Develops solutions to ill-defined problems,
  • Develops new bench methods and biological test methods to assess devices
  • Follows new implant technology from start to finish, becoming targeted subject matter expert in the new aspects of the design


Minimum qualifications:
BS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or similar
Required minimum years of work experience (primarily in medical device or related field): 7+ Years with BS, 5+ Years with MS
Experience in design simulation tools and analysis techniques
Experience managing technical aspects of projects as a member of a cross-functional core team

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership on a large-scale development program
  • Solid clinical knowledge and experience in cardiovascular anatomy.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated product development leadership and communication skills
  • Experienced with multi-faceted technology and product development programs
  • Ability to research literature and develop clinical understanding with technical credibility to develop a strategy for regulatory submission
  • Class II or Class III Medical Device product development experience
  • Solid experimental design and statistical analysis knowledge
  • Prior material selection experience for implantable cardiac devices
  • Experiences working with complex polymer systems, advanced degrees a plus especially with research experience.
