Streets Heavy Equipment Operator 1
Title: Streets Heavy Equipment Operator
FLSA Status: Non- Exempt


JOB PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is the safe and efficient operation of trucks, tractor-drawn equipment, and other light and heavy equipment used in the maintenance of City streets, parks and other city-owned properties. Responsibilities include effectively operating several types of automotive equipment and related specialized equipment and making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as needed. Assignments for new or special jobs will be given in detail, but repetitive jobs will be performed independently with considerable independent judgement.
This position is designated as emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (tornado, winter storm, flooding, severe thunderstorm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Utilizes a variety of hand and power tools in maintenance work.
  • Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment (i.e. Trucks, Backhoes, Skid-Steerers, Street Sweepers, Front End Loaders, Mowers, etc.).
  • Inspects and performs maintenance duties in City parks, rights-of-ways, and other city-owned properties.
  • Oversees the maintenance and installation of signs and banners.
  • Hauls machinery, refuse, dirt, sand, stone, and snow.
  • Transports persons and supplies to and from jobs.
  • Striping of streets and parking lots.
  • Crack seal streets, parking lots and trails.
  • Pothole repairs.
  • Assists in loading and unloading trucks.
  • Makes minor repairs and performs routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Picks up trash from park properties, rights-of-ways, and other city-owner properties.
  • Assists in the snow and ice removal operations.
  • Assists coworkers in the completion of various maintenance tasks.
  • Assists other departments and divisions in various maintenance operations.
  • Performs other duties as directed and/or required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Knowledge in the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, trails, and parking lots.
  • Knowledge of street sign and post installation according to MUTCD standards.
  • Knowledge of proper materials and equipment needed for projects.

  • Knowledge of snow plowing and salting operations.
  • Knowledge of construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
  • Knowledge of general functions and operations of municipal government.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Training:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma or any combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required.
  • One year of directly related experience in maintenance and operations.
License or Certificate:
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class A Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a CPR/AED Certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an OSHA -10 certification within one (1) year of employment.
