About us

Soldier Township is located adjacent to the north city limits of the City of Topeka between 75 highway and K4 highway in Shawnee County, Kansas, and stretches northward to the Jackson County line. Soldier Township is approximately 60 square miles, with approximately 17,000 residents.

Soldier Township Fire Department is accepting applications through May 31st, 2023 for a full-time Firefighter/EMT. Position filled will work a 24 hour shift, Modified Berkley schedule. Benefits include health and dental insurance, disability insurance, vacation, sick leave and KP&F retirement.

1) SUMMARY: Under general direction of the Battalion Chief, respond to all emergency and non-emergency calls, performs fire suppression and emergency medical service duties. Performs maintenance on buildings, grounds, apparatus and equipment as needed. Assists with public education programs and inspection program. Performs all other related work as required.

2) ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

a. Provide fire suppression and prevention services and stay current with training, code standards and general operating guidelines, to provide a professional product to the customer.

b. Provide primary patient assessment and treatment at the EMT level on any call for the emergency medical service, in conjunction with other medical providers.

c. Be knowledgeable in and follow State and Local EMS Protocols, and Department Standard Operating Guidelines, and Policies.

d. Exercise sound judgement with respect to all matters involving patient and responder safety including but not limited to: emergency vehicle operations, scene safety, injury prevention, infection controls, etc.

e. Comply with all Department training requirements.

f. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, other departments, agencies and the public.

g. Perform general maintenance of fire and rescue equipment and stations.

h. Operate a computer, with the ability to produce Microsoft Word and Excel documents, prepare reports, utilize Firehouse Software, and perform other related paperwork as required.

i. Provide safe response to and from emergency scenes in apparatus.

j. Perform public education and fire prevention details.

k. Perform other duties as assigned.

3) QUALIFICATIONS:

a. Must be 18 years of age

b. Must have a high school diploma or a GED certificate

c. Pass a background investigation and evaluation

d. Pass STFD’s physical agility test

e. Possess a valid Kansas driver’s License

f. Pass a medical exam prior to employment

g. Certified Emergency Medical Technician or higher

h. Certified Fire Fighter I, II and HazMat Awareness/Ops

i. Completion of NIMS 100,200,700,800

j. Obtain Kansas Non-commercial Class B CDL within six months of hire date

k. Obtain Driver/Operator Pumper within 2 Years of hire date

l. Must work 24 hour shifts laid out in the “Berkley” format

m. Members must agree to abide by the rules, standards and policies of the Department

n. Must maintain active member requirements as outlined in department policy

4) PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT OF WORK:

a. Requires heavy lifting required to complete tasks while wearing personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus, weighing approx. 50-100 lbs.

b. During firefighting activities when exposed to extreme heat, blood pressure and pulse are elevated.

c. Direct exposure to fire and its by-products while operating in structural firefighting equipment; About 20 minutes inside of a working fire incidents with regular breaks. This can continue until relieved.

d. Firefighting is done in all environments.
