Primary Purpose of Position:

Effectively manage Labor Relations in the plant. Interpret and administer the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, P&I Agreement and SUB Agreement and participate in local negotiations. Ensure consistent application of the Agreement, as well as plant policy, across the plant while maximizing management's rights.

Research, preparation and delivery of grievance answers and arbitration cases. Maintenance of effective tracking processes related to the grievance procedure. Analysis of trends associated with disputes and the grievance procedure. Development of countermeasures associated with negative trends.

Coach management and influence union leadership as part of the continuing objective of maintaining positive labor relations and effective dispute resolution. Educate upper management and line management around effective labor relations practices and administration of the Agreement.

Manage the HR Specialists in the plant HR organization. Coach and develop HR Specialists and other direct reports in a manner that drives an effective business relationship with the manufacturing organization and a sound relationship with the union. Develop HR Specialists for future roles of more responsibility.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Drive education and administration in a way that improves the competitive position of the plant. Educate management in effective labor relations initiatives and methods of developing more effective relationships with the union and employees.
  • Manage the grievance procedure with the objective of reducing grievances and improving success in arbitration. Hear and answer a majority of 3rd step grievance cases; manage cases for arbitration such that the Company's position is consistently upheld.
  • Participate in the #2 HR position for Local negotiations, as well as mid-term negotiations and discussions with the union. Support Master contract negotiations as the plant content expert. Handle HR Generalist duties as required.
  • Identify trends in plant, local and national labor relations. Develop local strategies that address trends- consistently apply positive labor relations trends across the plant and develop processes that improve negative trends
  • Develop the skills and drive effective behaviors of direct reports. Provide value added assignments and monitor progress. Coach in areas of improvement and recognize positive performance


Education:

  • 4-year degree; HR or related field. SPHR or PHR preferred.


Experience:

  • 5+ year HR experience in an organized manufacturing environment. Direct experience in dealing with unions, including management of grievances, arbitration cases, dispute resolution. Experience in interpreting and communicating a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Direct (table) experience in contract negotiations. Management of others preferred


Skills:

  • Successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal & managerial skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Must have the interpersonal skills and organizational savvy to effectively deal with all levels of the organization, from the union leadership to the factory floor to executive management. Solid understanding of Employment Law, NLRA and the skill set to make decisions and advise management on effective labor relations decisions.
