This position will support and advance research activities within the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) and across the Defense Intrepid Network as issued through the Creative Forces®: NEA Military Healing Arts Network (“Creative Forces”) initiative. The Scientist will work as a research asset at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE). The mission of the Creative Forces is to improve the health, wellness, and quality of life of trauma-exposed military service members and veterans, as well as their families and caregivers, by increasing knowledge of and access to clinical creative arts therapies and community arts engagement.
HJF is seeking a Scientist I to develop and conduct research related to the investigation of clinical creative arts therapies. This will include investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to new and existing research projects, collaborating with creative arts therapists, developing new protocols, and independently preparing scientific presentations, manuscripts, and grants for extramural funding. Incumbent may serve as a Principal Investigator or Associate Investigator on research studies.
  • Conduct Independent Research: Develop original research projects including protocol development and execution, data collection, and data analysis. Assess, prepare, complete, coordinate and submit protocol-related documents to IRBs. Develop data collection tools, questionnaires, databases and the application of research techniques.
  • Disseminate Research Findings: Prepare written research reports and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals. Present research methods and findings at local and regional meetings and at scientific conferences.
  • Pursue Extramural Funding: Initiate, coordinate and contribute to new grant and funding applications to enhance investment in clinical creative arts therapies research. This will include developing research ideas and methods, writing, creating preliminary data from current and past research protocols, and coordinating the submission of research grants.
  • Applies scientific knowledge to training and educational activities for research and clinical professional staff.
  • Collaborate with and provide research mentorship to clinical creative arts therapists across the Creative Forces and Defense Intrepid Network sites.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate scientific areas and the ability to analyze and interpret data is required.
  • Experience and training in clinical research including human subjects protection, regulatory affairs, and data collection required.
  • Training and experience in clinical science research, data management, and statistics are highly desirable.
  • Strong attention to detail, good organizational skills, initiative in performing assigned tasks and the ability to follow up complex projects with influence.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Physical Capabilities:
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.

Work Environment:
  • This position will take place primarily in a clinical setting.

Education and Experience
  • Doctorate Degree is required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.
