Job Description:
The PET/CT Nuclear Medicine Medical Assistant is a Part Time, Regular position working Monday-Friday varying shifts between 6am and 4pm. This position is eligible for Full Time, Health & Welfare Benefits.
This position will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID and other infectious diseases (i.e. MMR, Varicella, etc.) or qualify for a medical/religious exemption to work in a healthcare setting
Summary: To obtain the safest and highest quality diagnostic Nuclear Medicine, Spect/CT, PET/CT and diagnostic CT exams for imaging physiology and anatomy for interpretation by a radiologist per established Inland Imaging Associates, LLC guidelines and protocols.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Maintains high standard of technical skills by performing scans in Nuclear Medicine and PET of the following body systems: neurologic, endocrine, cardiovascular, pulmonary, skeletal, hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal and urology.
  • Assists radiologist in interpretation of nuclear medicine exams by effectively communicating anomalies about a patient’s exam or patient’s physical condition or any deviation by the patient from the normal prep for that exam that may help explain an abnormality.
  • Calculates appropriate dosage based on weight, age and exam type for intravenous and oral administration of radionuclides, iodine IV and oral contrast and other non-radioactive pharmaceuticals related to the performance of requested imaging.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual quality control testing of imaging equipment, dose calibrator and survey equipment.
  • Assists patient to obtain high quality nuclear medicine, PET/CT and diagnostic CT exams.
  • Effectively manages patient flow by;
    • Calls referring provider offices to clarify exam order and insurance authorization, learn pertinent patient history, explain study and/or other options to staff when appropriate, anticipate possible outcome.
    • Performing studies as soon as possible after patient arrives if a camera is available.
    • Assists in calling patients prior to their scan visit to relay exam specific patient preparatory information as appropriate.
    • Routinely monitors patient work board to move patients from one room to another to best accommodate schedule and room availability.
    • Orders appropriate radiopharmaceuticals by the cutoff times set by the radiopharmacy to ensure delivery by patients scheduled appointment time.
      • Completes all online forms using Medicalis.
    • Builds patient exam work list.
    • Changes exam codes in Medicalis as appropriate while checking to make sure current insurance authorization is still valid.
    • Adds charges for isotopes, medications and contrast as appropriate.
    • Adds appropriate modifiers for nurse time, research studies and PET/CT exams.
  • Interviews and assesses patient for Nuclear Medicine, diagnostic CT and PET/CT exams.
    • Obtains informed and or written consent as needed.
    • Reviews patient preparation checklist prior to procedure as appropriate.
  • Prepares equipment and room for exams:
    • Ensures appropriate scan protocol is selected and double checks scanner patient work list.
    • Keeps all department rooms organized, clean and stocked with supplies.
  • Provides high quality customer service by:
    • Evaluates patients’ and referring providers’ requests for exams, times and locations.
    • Asks appropriate questions to get information needed to schedule exams.
    • Assess if the requested exam is appropriate given the patient history.
    • Relays exam specific patient preparatory information as appropriate.
    • Initiates and completes phone calls in a professional manner.
    • Develops good working relationship with radiologists and feels comfortable asking them for guidance or clarification when needed.
  • Communicates additional information such as: changes in the patient schedule, cancellations, precautions, STATS, nurse requirements, add-ons, etc. to staff in our department as well as other departments or parties that may be affected.
  • Reviews next days assigned schedule to:
    • Maximizes equipment utilization by time, location and specialty slot.
    • Pre-orders isotopes with calibration times prior to 11:00 with Radiopharmacy.
    • Checks patient’s account for changes in the physician’s schedule.
  • Calls patients for the next day to:
    • Confirm the appointment
    • Confirm the location of the appointment
    • Reiterate the proper preparation for the exam and the expected duration of the exam
  • Calls patients to re-schedule exams as needed.
    • Assists patient with preparation instructions, directions to Inland Imaging facility, etc.
    • Takes an active role in service recovery by de-escalating stressful situations, trying to accommodate patient if exam is being rescheduled and/or know when to either do an exam at no charge, reduced rate or offer a gift card when it is our fault an exam has to be repeated.
  • This position may be required to work in a hospital, urgent care or clinical setting.
  • Scheduling
    • Is able to effectively and efficiently schedule PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine exams
    • Works with prior auth to obtain and verify correct insurance authorization for exam
    • Works with patient and referring office to understand the timeline for which the exam needs to be performed and schedules the exam in a way that meets their needs if at all possible.
    • References spreadsheet showing technologist and camera availability before scheduling
    • Gives patients the appropriate dietary and medication preparation for the exam as well as address and directions to get to our department
    • Uses appropriate modifiers when scheduling exams.
    • Ask the patient about other exams scheduled on the same day and check iSite and Medicalis for other exams scheduled on the same day and coordinate with those departments as needed.
    • Coordinate care for inpatients, pediatrics, St. Luke’s or other patients with special needs with all parties involved. Be sure we have appropriate staffing and/or nurse help to care for the patient safely.
  • Research
    • Is actively involved in DATscan, Amyloid and/or TAU research studies
    • Does the necessary training up front to be able to care for research patients
    • Involved with phantom testing and/or building new research protocols and the subsequent protocol validation tests.
    • Works directly with Inland Imaging’s research coordinator and NucMed/PetCT manager to make sure we understand timeline of study, potential volume and to make sure the billing process is working correctly.
    • Is an advocate for growing research at Inland Imaging when talking with other departments or outside entities.
  • Other special projects and duties as assigned.

Maybe someone doesn’t seem totally with it yet because they have had multiple chemotherapy treatments and it has affected their cognitive function).
  • Adheres to departmental standards and personnel policies by demonstrating professional demeanor in conduct and appearance.
  • Follows company departmental standards and personnel policies by using good teamwork and communication skills to help identify concerns and solutions, assisting where needed to ensure a safe and smooth functioning department.
  • Follows all Health and Safety policies and guidelines of Inland Imaging or its partners depending on work location.
  • Performs other duties as required by displaying team spirit and demonstrating a desire for self-growth. Accepting additional projects and responsibilities and taking the initiative by requesting additional projects and responsibilities.
  • Attendance is required for this position.
  • Rotates to other shifts and locations as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field – required
  • Graduate from an Accredited Nuclear Medicine Technologist BS Nuclear Medicine is required
  • Experience: One year of PET/CT – Nuclear Medicine Technologist experience is required
    • Anatomy and medical terminology
    • Phlebotomy – preferred
    • Medical office experience – preferred
    • Understanding of nuclear medicine procedures to be read by radiologist preferred
  • Licensure: Must maintain current Washington State Certified Radiologic Technologist License
  • Certification: Must be registry eligible or possess current certification by NMTCB or ARRT (N) and ARRT (CT) or ARRT (R)
    • Current CPR/BLS required
  • Computer Skills: Experience with the following computer applications is desired: Outlook; Kronos; Microsoft Office; I-Site; Intranet; Workday; EPIC
  • Background Check:
    • Must be able to pass a background check required by RCW 43.43.830-840 to work with children under the age of 16, developmentally disabled persons or vulnerable adults
    • In order to comply with provisions set forth in Sections 1128 and 1156 of the Social Security Act, all new employees of Inland Imaging Clinical Associates, LLC will be checked against the LIST OF EXCLUDED INDIVIDUALS provided by the Department of Health & Human Services, Office of the Inspector General (OIG).
