EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited four year college or university
Two years nursing experience

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE :
Current RN licensure or compact licensure recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing
Certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services to administer Hearing, Vision and Spinal Screening (obtained within school year hired)
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR/AED) Certification
Acanthosis Nigrican screening certification by The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (obtained within school year hired)

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education Agency.
PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY :
Responsible for the implementation and management of the comprehensive program of health services, health counseling with students, parents and school personnel, provision of preventive health services, augmentation of health education program and liaison with the school community. Assesses and intervenes to manage acute, chronic and emergency health care needs of students and staff. Provides direct instruction and/or assists classroom teachers in health related content areas (i.e., blood borne pathogen transmission/maturation). Provides specialized training to appropriate campus staff regarding student-specific health needs. Provides related services and specialized nursing care to students as prescribed. Conducts State and District mandated health screenings in appropriate grade levels and makes appropriate referrals and follow-up. Articulates mission of health services to faculty, staff, parents, administrators and community at large. Serves as liaison and resource to parents and community, in developing school-linked services and resources for students.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assesses student health status; identifies acute, chronic and emergency needs; and makes appropriate referrals utilizing knowledge base and strategies applicable to the preschool aged child through young adult.
2. Monitors and provides direct services and care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols. Maintains accountability for all care and services provided appropriately.
3. Serves as health advocate for students and staff, documents thoroughly all nursing assessments and care provided and maintains complete and confidential health information.
4. Collaborates with faculty, administration and parent/guardian, in providing assessment data for the child’s successful entry into school.
5. Notify parents of accident or illness and secures medical care for students in emergency cases (when parent/guardian or emergency contact cannot be reached).
6. Uses age appropriate strategies to assess the very young child where communication and expression are limited.
7. Provides and evaluates outcomes of direct and skilled nursing care and procedures for medically fragile students, integrating the medically fragile student safely into the school setting.
8. Provides direct health care, emergency first aid, and related health services according to district policies and procedures.
9. Provides consultation to school administrators in crisis/emergency situations.
10. Collaborates with campus administration and staff regarding communicable diseases, infection control, health and safety matters and implementation of health related plans on Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
11. Provides preventive health care by: providing appraisals, screening programs, referral and follow-up; recognizes, reports and uses control measures on communicable diseases; and monitor and follow-up on immunization needs and health counseling.
12. Responsible for the care and well being of students and others with blood borne pathogens and for the establishment of universal precautions and confidentiality guidelines on each campus.
13. Elementary RN: Provides direct instruction to elementary age students in health related content areas, (i.e., maturation, wellness and disease prevention) and provides overview of programs to parents and the community in this area – Acts as a resource for parents in this area.
14. Records, documents and reports service units for district School Health Related Services (SHAR’s) and Medicaid Administrative Claims (MAC) reimbursement programs.
15. Develops and provides in-service and training for faculty, special education, custodial and transportation personnel on health related matters, i.e. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Hepatitis, seizures, blood borne pathogens, child abuse, diabetes care and use of automatic external defibrillator (AED).
16. Trains and supervises all clinic paraprofessional personnel and participates in their annual performance evaluation.
17. Conducts specific health instruction for students, parents and staff and serves as a resource to staff regarding health instruction.
18. Develops and implements individualized health care plans for medically fragile students, 504 students receiving nursing services and other students, including emergency health plans as needed.
19. Participates in collaborative/consultative role in Admission-Referral-Dismissal (ARD) process for special education services; interprets medical information for ARD Committee and develops an appropriate plan of care when providing nursing services.
20. Accountable for all assessments, judgments and referrals in the health of students including child abuse, mental health areas, and emergency EMS transports.
21. Oversees and monitors all student health records (HealthCheck) and delivery of school health programs on campus as mandated by State Law and District Policy maintaining confidentiality in all written/electronic records and verbal interactions with parent/guardian, students, faculty and staff.
22. Provides health care and consultation to employees in collaboration with the Department of Risk Management, does not play the role of primary health care provider but refers employee to their physician.
23. Participates in campus activities (PTA, 504 committee, Critical Response Team) including but not limited to other activities as requested by the campus administration; articulates health related issues and concerns.
24. Maintains adequate inventory of clinic supplies and equipment to provide efficient operation of the clinic and prompt effective management of student, faculty/staff and visitor illness or injury.
25. Serves as community liaison and resource to parent/guardian and community in the development of community and school linked services (i.e., health fairs, resources for parents and students to access health care), improve health care outcomes and provide resources for campus community.
26. Participates in professional development and other activities as directed by the Director of Health Services and as mandated by the Texas Nurse Practice Act to maintain professional nursing skills and knowledge.
27. Required to work a minimum of one football game during the football season at District stadiums, if necessary may be required to work more when a volunteer is not available.
28. Maintains confidentiality of information.
29. Reports to work on time every day.
30. Performs additional duties and accepts other responsibilities as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
• Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common nursing/medical journals
  • Ability to write and document accurate assessments in HealthCheck
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts as it relates to medication/dosage calculations
  • Valid Texas Driver's License with a driving record that meets the requirements of the District
