Specific Responsibilities:

This is Nutrition Educator professional position working in the public health nutrition and dietetic in the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) Palm Beach County Health Department (CHD). This position provides education services within the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) in the West Palm Beach Health Center and other community sites as needed. Work is performed under the supervision of the Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. This position requires independent judgment, initiative, applying general knowledge of business practices and skill in applying instructions to accomplish various job functions. Complies with the mandatory requirements in Section 215.422 F.S. and Chapter 3A-24 Florida Administrative Code regarding prompt payment process of special formula.


This position is designated as a sensitive position and is required to maintain confidential information in accordance with the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) Palm Beach County Health Department (CHD) Information Security Policy, Protocols and Procedures. Confidential information data sets include Social Security, WIC, Clinical Information and Administrative. This position may view, update or release confidential information. This position has access to Health Management System (HMS) Employee Activity Report (EARs), reports; WIC FL WiSE System and QFLOW. Utilizes HMS for entering the EAR’s. Utilizes mass media for dissemination of nutrition education.


Assesses nutritional status; provides nutritional care, management and education for maternal and child health clients who are at high nutritional risk according to the WIC Program and other criteria. Evaluates effectiveness of nutrition services and care. Review medical records, determine nutritional care needs and perform WIC Program certifications. Provides individual nutritional counseling and group nutrition education for the WIC client population.


Participates in quality assurance programs to develop and insure use of appropriate standards of nutritional care. Serves as a consultant and resource person on nutrition to health center staff. Works with physicians and other health care professionals to insure comprehensive nutritional care is provided for clients.


Provides nutrition counseling and education in off-site facilities serving health department clients. Covers nutrition clinic services as a staff relief worker in other agency health centers. Provides nutrition education and develops referral mechanisms for community groups and agencies whose clients are also served in the health center. Incorporates WIC Program services into community outreach services.


Designs, prepares and assembles audio and visual teaching aids. Coordinates client nutrition education with other health center staff. Maintain records, client data and prepare reports.


Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Windows based computer software programs and equipment or specific program software such as WIC FL WiSE System.
  • Knowledge of the current science and practice of food and nutrition, dietetics or food service.
  • Knowledge of normal nutrition principles and food needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Knowledge of meal planning, food budgeting and purchasing.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education to others in groups or individual instruction.
  • Ability to determine nutritional needs and develop nutrition education plans for individuals who are not at medical high nutritional risk.
  • Ability to educate individuals and families about food and nutritional needs.
  • Ability to participate in education or in-service training programs through teaching classes, demonstrating food practices, giving talks, and developing or selecting educational materials.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures

Qualifications:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics/Nutrition or a directly nutrition related degree. FS 383.011.


Other job-related requirements for this position:

  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Travel throughout Palm Beach County is required.
  • This position works primarily in an office setting and most of the working period is spent in a seated position.
  • Tasks may require substantial repetitive movement of the wrists, hands or fingers for sustained periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move objects up to 25 lbs.

Working hours: (A) Daily from 7:30AM to 4:30PM (B) Total hours in workweek 40 (C) Explain any variation in work (split shift, rotation, etc.)

Work hours may be adjusted to accommodate evening and/or weekend clinics or activities.
