SATCOM SYSTEMS ENGINEER

Systek supplies the U.S. Government with Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) support. Our subject matter experts (SMEs) are trusted agents who manage the technical aspects of our customers' projects. SME roles include assessing present capabilities, projecting future needs, writing project charters, preparing system requirements, supporting the selection of development contractors, supporting project design and development, supporting test and verification, and managing fielding, training, and operator support. Systek is among the U.S. DOD's most trusted and highly respected SETA Companies. Systek's SMEs are highly experienced, lead technical teams on behalf of our customers, support open commercial standards bodies, support military standard (MIL standard) development, and publish. This position can be based in Orlando, FL or Lorton, VA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Challenge: One of Systek's primary customers is leading the comprehensive modernization of the DOD Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Earth segment. We are bringing DOD SATCOM to the 21st century. This modernization is a major transformation of infrastructure and operations in the following aspects.
  • Migration of SATCOM Earth Segment infrastructure from L-Band Intermediate Frequency (L-Band IF) over coaxial cable to Digital Intermediate Format (Digital IF) over Ethernet
  • Migration from manual management and configuration (M&C) of SATCOM Earth segment equipment to computer-assisted M&C resource automation
  • Migration from lengthy and labor-intensive SATCOM planning and link implementation to quick responsive SATCOM as a service
  • Enhancing SATCOM capabilities from Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) systems
  • Integration of function to culminate in virtualization of most SATCOM Earth segment systems
  • Enhancing DOD SATCOM reliability through automated networking provisions, path redundancy, and protected resources
  • Providing for growth of DOD SATCOM Gateways from support for hundreds of SATCOM links to support for thousands of SATCOM links

QUALIFICATIONS

The Dream Team: Systek is assembling an interdisciplinary team to address these challenges:
  • IF/RF Performance: e.g. spectrum, noise floors, linearity, intermodulation products, spurious, harmonics, VSWR, amplitude response, phase deviation from linear, impact of interference
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP): sample rate, sample depth, sampled stream rate, sampling noise floor, digital filtering, transform, in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) signal processing
  • Modems: modulation, coding, spectrum, Error Vector Magnitude (EVM), bulk encryption, Bit Error Rate (BER), Eb/N0, ES/N0, phase locked loops (PLLs), carrier and symbol synchronization, forward error correction (FEC), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency hop spread spectrum (FHSS), direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS)
  • Networking: hierarchical networking, spine-leaf architecture, network performance, Quality of Service (QoS), Wireshark analysis
  • Cybersecurity: Risk Management Framework (RMF), Blue Team, Red Team
  • Data Center Support: servers, power, cooling, virtual machines
  • Automated Management: YANG, NETCONF, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), management architecture, hierarchical M&C
  • Virtualization: virtual machines, virtual networks
  • Systems Engineering: capabilities, specifications, interface definition, performance requirements, test approaches
  • Engineering Management: System Engineering Plan (SEP), Test and Evaluation Master Plan (TEMP), Program Protection Plan (PPP), Test Plans, Test Procedures
  • Quick learner, good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to lead or support a team
  • Bachelor's degree required. Degree in Engineering or related field preferred.

Active DoD Secret Clearance or ability to obtain one required
