THERAPEUTIC DAY SCHOOL!

We are looking for a full-time Special Education Teachers to join our team!

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing each student with a motivating and emotionally and physically safe environment for learning by applying the principles of ABA in their instruction. As educational leaders, classroom teachers are expected to develop and implement the IEP and, as appropriate, supervise 1:1’s instruction and data collection in collaboration with assigned behavior support personnel. The special education teacher creates effective classroom management and organizational skills and strategies, participates and provides professional development to classroom staff and peers, and create a supportive environment that is conducive to effective instruction and learning across content areas by applying the principles of ABA. In addition, the special education teachers must be able to differentiate instruction for a variety of learners, align student curriculum with common core learning standards, develop IEP goals that target student deficits and build upon student strengths, and collaborate effectively with faculty, families, and outside therapists to supports student learning across core content and independent functioning levels.

Summary of Duties

1. Provides direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.

2. Employs special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve skills across developmental domains.

3. Instructs students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques.

4. Participates in the development of IEPs, reviews documentation, and attends all IEP meetings for students on their caseload.

5. Conducts and supervises the development of systematic and descriptive behavioral assessments, including functional analyses, and provides behavior analytic interpretations of the results.

6. Participates in parent and faculty meetings as appropriate.

7. Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids at students’ instructional, interest and maturity level of pupils; maintains required inventory records.

8. Assists in ABA and program training of new hires.

9. Participates in curriculum development and mapping to support student growth.

10. Provides coaching, consultation, and professional development training to 1:1 support personnel regarding curriculum, instruction, assessment, and data collection/analysis.

11. Provides feedback regarding the effectiveness of curriculums and student programs and makes recommendations.

12. Participates in faculty committees and administrative meetings when appropriate.

13. Participates in school events and fundraisers.

Qualifications

1. Knowledgeable regarding how to adapt to student materials, the learning environment, and methods to support student learning.

2. Demonstrates effective communication regarding student programming, school and home behavioral supports, and the school’s philosophy.

3. The ability to provide students and families with consultative services outside of the regular school day.

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

5. Follows policies and procedures; Completes tasks correctly and on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan; Plans for additional resources; Supports organization's goals and values.

6. Displays original thinking and creativity; Meets challenges with resourcefulness; Generates suggestions for improving work; Develops innovative approaches and ideas. 7. Shall be physically, mentally and emotionally able to provide responsible care for all children including children with disabilities. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Lowering
  • Bending
  • Crouching
  • Bending down on one knee while the other knee is elevated (in a lunge position).
  • Maintaining a position with both knees on the floor.
  • Standing quickly from a squatting position with no assistance.
  • Grasping securely with the hands.
  • Rapid forward and backward movement shifting the weight from one leg to another.
  • Walking briskly while helping to move another individual (with moderate resistance) There is no carrying of another person, simply pushing against them to move them forward. The stress might be similar to that involved in walking on a treadmill on a moderate incline.
  • Repetitive movements of the knee, back, wrist, and hands.
  • Walking with resistance (helping to move another individual) for brief periods while bending forward from the waist.
  • Walking with resistance (helping to move another individual) for brief periods while slightly crouched with both knees bent slightly.

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

2. Current Illinois Type 09 or Type 10 Teacher Certification (LBS 1 required).

3. Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working with students with autism either within an elementary or high school setting (ages 3-21) across core content areas.

4. Must have a working knowledge of general and special education curriculums, an understanding of the principals of ABA, and be able to align student program goals with the common core standards.

5. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
