Position Summary

The Adult Education Corrections Instructor reports to the Director of Adult Education. Instruction will be provided to the adult education students that are incarcerated. The instructor will plan, implement, document, and evaluate instructional practices, procedures, and materials. They will also provide direct, on-site daily instruction to assist students in achieving their GED.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides instruction in literacy, adult basic education, GED test preparation, English language acquisition, family literacy, integrated English literacy, civic education, integrated education and training at the Cullman County Detention Center and rehabilitation programs in Blount, Cullman, Morgan, and Winston Counties.
  • Applies research-based instructional practices that incorporate the use of computers and other technologies.
  • knowledgeable of reading, writing, and/or math instructional strategies.
  • Uses a variety of instructional practices and tools appropriate to the needs of the student.
  • Uses lesson plans aligned with CCR Standards that integrate instruction across content areas.
  • Provides continuous feedback and adjusts instruction to maximize student learning.
  • Work with colleagues to develop and evaluate curriculum and material.
  • Administer and interpret appropriate placement and diagnostic tests.
  • Use formal and informal assessment data to monitor and document student progress.
  • Collect and maintain accurate data for program improvement and accountability.
  • Participate in the retention and follow-up of students.
  • Maintains knowledge of program regulations, policy, and procedures.
  • Maintains student records.
  • At the Cullman County Detention Center: Additional duties may include assisting AE students with job search skills in preparation for the workforce; institutions or training programs; helping students with job search skills in preparation for the workforce; connecting students with support services; and helping students establish career and educational goals.
  • Comply with all policies of the College, the Alabama Community College System, the Department of Corrections, and the ACCS Board of Trustees.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, required
  • Experience in Adult Education, preferred.
  • Teaching experience, preferred.
  • Experience working with incarcerated individuals, preferred.
  • Experience working with socially, economically, culturally and/or academically disadvantaged populations, preferred
  • Knowledge of AAESAP, preferred

Application Procedures/Additional Information

Appropriate placement on ACCS Salary Schedule D3 ($28,225-$56,450) of the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule. This position involves performance duties for a federally funded project and is contingent on continued federal funding. In the event that funds for this position are discontinued or significantly reduced or if federal requirements for funding this project no longer include this position, the College shall have the right to discontinue the position. Neither tenure or non-probationary status may be attained in this position.
