About ShoreCorps/AmeriCorps:

ShoreCorps is a State AmeriCorps program, funded in part by the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism. AmeriCorps is a civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of "helping others and meeting critical needs in the community." Members commit to full-time or part-time positions offered by a network of nonprofit community organizations and public agencies, to fulfill assignments in the fields of education, public safety, health care, and environmental protection. The program is often seen as a domestic Peace Corps. It employs more than 75,000 Americans in intensive service each year.

Position Description:

The Berlin Heritage Foundation/Taylor House Museumis seeking a half-time AmeriCorps Member for the 2023-2024 service year. This is an opportunity to gain experience in a non-profit organization focused on historic preservation and education.

Located in the heart of Berlin's National Register Historic District, the Calvin B. Taylor House Museum is a favorite gathering spot for cultural and community events, offering festivals, programs, and meeting space for the entire community. Inside, local history exhibits and period furnishings allow visitors a glimpse into the lives of many who left an impact on local history, depicting life from the early 1800’s to the present day. Guided and self-guided tours are available, as well as children’s workshops and story times.

Our Museum archives are a repository of artifacts that help us tell the stories of Berlin and fulfill our mission; education with an emphasis on preserving the cultural history and historic integrity of Berlin and the surrounding area. Our exhibits document the cultural heritage of our diverse and vibrant community and a way of life unique to the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. As part of the Beach to Bays Heritage Areas Cape to Cape Scenic Byway, we enjoy visitors from across the country, including many tourists visiting Ocean City, MD.

The main responsibilities of the member will be:

  • Conducting research
  • Giving tours as a docent
  • Running educational programs

The member will work to gain an understanding of the process of researching and developing public knowledge and running educational programs. They will interact with the public and complete independent work. Duties can be tailored to specific objectives and interests of the member. All research materials gathered during, and as part of, this internship will become part of the Taylor House Museum’s collection.

Requirements for applicants include the following:

  • Have a strong interestin serving the community
  • Be able to relate to diverse populations
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Able to provide copy of either high school diploma, GED, or college transcript
  • Have reliabletransportation
  • Be available to attend the free, AmeriCorps class at SU alternate Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., during the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive Criminal History Check, which includes FBI fingerprinting
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • Applicants DO NOT need to be college students, anyone from the community who fits the above requirements may participate.

  • An education award of $3,447.50 for future educational expenses or repayment of federal student loans - members who are age 55 or older may gift their ed. award to a child or grandchild
  • Federal student loan forbearance while in service, with exemption from paying interest accrued during that time
  • 8 tuition-free credits at Salisbury University for completion of training course
  • Access to AmeriCorps Alumni Network

Hours will be flexible during the off-season (Nov-May), but in-season (May-Oct) the majority of the hours will be served when the museum is open to the public - Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The member will begin on or after August 15th, 2023 and must complete 900 hours by August 14th, 2024.

This position is offered through a partnership with ShoreCorps, the AmeriCorps program at Salisbury University. It is contingent upon federal funding and approval of the AmeriCorps office.
