Homeward Bound Pets is searching for an Assistant Director (AD). This is a hands-on, results driven role that will be responsible for building and maintaining a culture of continuous improvement. The right candidate will prioritize and drive performance improvements that will have a significant impact on business results, as well as delivering operational excellence to customers and will be guided through the transition and succession planning over the course of one to two years.

Summary: The Assistant Director will work with the Executive Director to oversee all programs of the organization including, but not limited to the shelter, thrift shop, Spay/Neuter clinic, events and marketing, fundraising, grant writing, and program development.

This position will lead Homeward Bound Pets in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the board.

The AD will build and maintain control of efficient operations to drive extensive and sustainable growth for the company. This position will provide oversight and direction for personnel and will coordinate with Department Managers to improve business/operational performance.

This position will promote communication and cooperation amongst all departments. Details:

Organization Operations

  • Oversee all operations/programs: Shelter, Thrift Shop, Spay/Neuter Clinic, Angel Fund, Events, and Marketing/Social Media
  • Responsible to direct volunteer recruitment, retention and management
  • Work with the Management team on the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff
  • Oversee employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of Homeward Bound Pets

Leadership & Management:

  • Develop and maintain strategic goals for the organization in coordination with the ED and the Board of Directors
  • Actively engage and energize HBPets Humane Society volunteers, board members, event committees, and funders
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; serve as ex-officio of each committee; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for ongoing local operations
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain HBPets Humane Society's management team
  • Recruit, complete reference checks and retain capable staff
  • Hires, evaluates and supervises all staff

Finance:

Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the HBPets Humane Society, to include working with the Executive Director in creating the annual budget, submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

  • Operate within the approved annual budget
  • Fundraise and develop other resources
  • Grant writing
  • Fiscal management:
  • Monitor expenses and income.
  • Develop annual budget with Executive Director and Bookkeeper, and present to the board finance committee
  • Develop and maintain corporate and business relationships.
  • Develop relationships with donors of Homeward Bound Pets and maintain regular communications with donors to bring in a continued line of income

Fundraising & Communications:

  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion
  • Work with the Marketing Communication Specialist and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand

Planning & New Business:

  • Build partnerships, establishing relationships with donors, and political and community leaders within our current service area.

Governance:

  • Functions as the liaison between the Executive Director, board and staff.
  • Keep the Executive Director informed of the condition of the organization and all-important factors that influence it.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum 5-10 years working in with a non-profit organization, at least 3 years of management experience preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree is required (masters preferred)
  • Ability to build high performing teams and provide coaching and mentoring.
  • Ability to speak professionally in public
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven track record of staff development
  • Computer skills with basic applications (MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, etc.)
  • Proven success with grant writing and fundraising
  • Working knowledge of financial reports and budgeting
  • Outstanding verbal, written, public speaking skills
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt to changing needs of the organization

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: Up to $65,000.00 per year
