History

UCHealth, a 501(c) (3) health system, was formed in 2012 to deliver the highest quality patient care with the highest quality patient experience. Organized through a Joint Operating Agreement, the partnership combines Poudre Valley Health System (PVHS), one of the top-performing community health systems in the nation, having won the Baldrige Award in 2008, with University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), one of the Top 10 academic medical centers in the country, into an organization dedicated to building a healthier community and providing unmatched patient care in the Rocky Mountain West. Together, UCH and PVHS are founding organizations in UCHealth. In late 2012, Memorial Health System (MHS) joined the organization through an affiliation and lease operating agreement with the City of Colorado Springs.

UCHealth's mission is "We improve lives. In big ways through learning, healing, and discovery. In small, personal ways through human connection; but in all ways, we improve lives."

Organizational Governance

UCHealth is governed by an 11-member fiduciary Board of Directors. Entity-specific hospital boards at UCHA, PVHS and MHS remain to oversee medical staff and credentialing, quality, joint commission, and oversight of other day-to-day operating activities. UCHealth is not an agency of the state government and is not subject to administrative direction or control by the Regents of the University of Colorado (the Regents) and is not financially accountable to the Regents, although the State of Colorado reports UCHA as a component unit. Hence, maintaining positive working relationships with the Regents is critical.

University of Colorado Hospital

University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) is the Rocky Mountain region's leading academic medical center and one of the premier hospitals in the country. UCH is best known as an innovator in patient care and often as one of the first hospitals to bring new medicine to the patients' bedside. UCH is one of twelve Colorado hospitals that compose UCHealth. The hospital's physicians are affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, part of the University of Colorado system. Based on the expansive Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado, the hospital is where patient care, research, and education converge to establish the future of healthcare delivery.

Year after year, UCH has consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the country by the most prestigious rating agencies, including the following:
  • U.S. News & World Report has named UCH the best hospital in Colorado since 2012 and ranked 27th nationally in the 2021-2022 report.
  • The U.S. News Best Hospitals report ranks eight specialties at UCH among the best in the U.S. and 18 other procedures and conditions as "high performing."
  • UCH shares the honor of having the country's second-best respiratory care with National Jewish Health.
  • The University of Colorado Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center in the Rocky Mountain region, and one of only 51 in the country. Moreover, it is a member of the elite National Comprehensive Cancer Network.
  • UCH has been awarded the Magnet designation five consecutive times placing it in the top one percent of hospitals in the world.

Founded in 1921 by the Colorado General Assembly as part of the University of Colorado medical campus, UCH is now the region's leading tertiary care and referral center as well as the academic medical center of UCHealth, a nonprofit health system that includes twelve hospitals and hundreds of clinics throughout

Colorado. Top medical professionals, superior medicine, and progressive change make UCH one of the leading hospitals in the nation. Community physicians from around the state, region, and nation send patients to UCH for advanced, collaborative care by some of the leading specialists in their fields. The organization is respected for its exceptional teams of medical specialists, its remarkable medical outcomes, and its overall clinical excellence.

Financially, UCH and UCHealth remain in a strong position. For FY21, UCH total net patient revenue was $2.219 billion with net operating income of $279.1 million (12.3 percent operating margin) and a Medicare Case Mix Index of 2.45. The hospital employs a rigorous budgeting process for new staff and capital expenditures and regularly reviews adherence to staffing and budget.

The Anschutz Medical Campus

Starting in 1996, the Anschutz Foundation began making a generous series of gifts to help both the University of Colorado Hospital and the University of Colorado Denver build new facilities on the just-decommissioned site of the Fitzsimons Army Medical

Center in Aurora. In late 2006, the university's Board of Regents named the portions of the old Army site it controlled The Anschutz Medical Campus. By then, its occupants included many hospital buildings (many of which, in turn, had already been named to honor Philip Anschutz and the Anschutz Foundation) as well the health science and graduate schools of the University of Colorado. In addition, many other health, scientific, and medical enterprises had been attracted to the area including Children's Hospital Colorado, CU Medicine, and Fitzsimons Innovation, a bioscience park. The VA Medical Center is also housed on the east end of the campus. The key components of UCH on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora include:
  • The Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion, a 703-bed hospital.
  • The Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion, home to 60+ clinics.
  • The Anschutz Cancer Pavilion, the renowned clinical services of the University of Colorado Cancer Center (with outcomes that far exceed state and national averages).
  • The UCHealth Sue Anschutz-Rodgers Eye Center, a state-of-the-art facility with national and international reputations for excellence in routine and complex ophthalmic care.
  • The Center for Dependency, Addiction, and Rehabilitation (CeDAR), the region's premier residential and treatment center for adults and families afflicted with alcoholism, gambling, and substance dependencies.

UCH is the Rocky Mountain's only academic medical center and offers the latest in research and medical treatments. All providers at UCH are also faculty members at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, one of the premier academic research institutions in the country. The University of Colorado School of Medicine garnered $312 million in NIH funding in 2021.

CU Medicine

University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine) is dedicated to providing business operations and administrative support to nearly 3,000 active University of Colorado School of Medicine clinical healthcare providers. CU Medicine offers a variety of administrative and healthcare support career opportunities and serves as a resource for patients and physicians seeking information about the University of Colorado network.
Competitive Landscape

UCHealth is now the largest health system in Colorado with 23% market share including dominant market positions in both northern Colorado and Colorado Springs. UCHealth's principal competitors include, but are not limited to, four health systems comprised of large and small hospitals, none with academic medical centers: Centura Health (a joint venture between CHI and Adventist Health) operates seventeen hospitals in Colorado and Western Kansas. Health One (for-profit, part of HCA) operates seven hospitals in Colorado. SCL Health operates seven hospitals in Colorado. Banner Health, with twenty-nine hospitals total, operates five hospitals in Colorado. Kaiser Permanente also has a large market presence and has relationships with several health systems including UCHealth in Denver and Colorado Springs.
The Community

UCHealth system's primary service area consists of the Colorado Front Range Urban

Corridor stretching from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Pueblo, Colorado with parts of western

Nebraska. University Hospital's academic referral area includes Wyoming, Idaho,

Montana, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, and all of

Colorado. UCHealth is headquartered in the Denver Metropolitan area, a seven-county metro area with a population of 2.9 million that comprises their Central Region, including Aurora, the third largest city in Colorado with 366,000 residents.
