Job Description:
The goal of this recruitment is to fill these positions at the Clinical Laboratory Scientist level. However, we encourage candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for a Medical Laboratory Technician 2 to apply, as under-fill options are available until the selected candidate meets the minimum qualifications for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist not to exceed two years.
This position is open until filled and can close at any time.
This is a full-time, permanent, classified position which is represented by a union.

has a career opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in Salem, Oregon to perform technical functions as well as clerical and administrative functions that support medical laboratory operations.
The Oregon State Hospital provides patient-centered, psychiatric treatment for adults from throughout the state who need hospital-level care. What will you do?
As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
  • Perform waived and moderately complex testing according to established protocols in urinalysis, serology, chemistry, immunochemistry, hematology, and toxicology while meeting requirements defined by the lab director.
  • Review reference reports for proper patient identification, completeness of reports and correct reference ranges.
  • Screen lab reports for critical values, STAT reports, or reportable results reporting and follow-up with proper logging/reporting of these values per protocols.
  • Prepare samples for transportation to other laboratories.
  • Report testing results using established procedures; recognize normal, abnormal, and critical results; and follow-up with appropriate investigation and possible troubleshooting.
  • Perform and document routine maintenance, preventative maintenance, and calibration procedures.
  • Recognize, troubleshoot, and problem-solve instrument equipment malfunctions.
  • Accumulate and tabulate data used for laboratory QI projects and monitor each quarterly report.
  • Collect samples from potentially verbally and physically abusive patients, utilizing established protocols for technique, test requirements, safety, security, and patient/staff communication to produce satisfactory test results and patient cooperation.
  • Advise nursing and other unit staff regarding acceptable specimen collection, handling, storage, and transport.

What are we looking for?
Minimum Requirements
Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Salary $4,073 - $6,230)
A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
OR
A bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, or chemistry AND one year of documented internship or experience in a clinical laboratory performing a variety of standard testing and examination procedures under general supervision in support of professional clinical or medical laboratory personnel.
NOTE: Must have current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire.
Medical Laboratory Technician 2 – Underfill Option (Salary $3,398 - $5,148)
A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or microbiology.
OR
Two years of Medical Laboratory Technician 1 level experience preparing reagents, testing media and stains, performing standardized laboratory tests, examinations and occasionally assisting in more complex, specialized testing procedures; AND one year of "technical trainee" experience as a laboratory assistant in a clinical laboratory.
OR
Completion of a certified clinical laboratory training program.
OR
A certificate or associate degree in an applied science from an accredited medical or clinical laboratory technician training program.
NOTE Must have current Medical Laboratory Technician certification, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Transcripts with qualifying courses highlighted must be submitted for all required and/or related courses.
Requested Skills
  • Preference will be given to applicants with phlebotomy experience.
  • Knowledge of chemistry, biology, physiology, and mathematics.
  • Experience implementing quality control laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Experience assessing and verifying the validity of patient test results through the evaluation of quality control sample values prior to reporting patient test results.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Experience packaging and shipping of infectious agents.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various standard laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Experience calibrating and maintaining standard laboratory equipment.
  • Experience reading and following scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Experience using HIS (Avatar) and LIS (Orchard).
  • Experience creating and maintaining a work environment that is respectful and accepting of diversity among team members and the people we serve.
